About the Item

SAINT CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA ORIGIN : SWABIA, ULM REGION PERIOD : ca. 1510-1520 Height : 118 cm Length : 39 cm Depth : 17 cm Limewood Important wood figure hollowed out in the back with a gouge. Original polychromy well preserved. Lack the top of the crown. The sword’s blade and the left hand are later restorations. The Golden Legend written by Jacobus de Voragine during the 13th century tells us Saint Catherine, daughter of king, was an expert in mastering liberal arts when she was only eighteen. When Emperor Maxence decided to organize an extraodrinary sacrifices ceremony dedicated to the pagan gods the young woman did not hesitate to confront him. Indeed the young princess, seeing that out of fear even christians were making offerings, tried to convince the emperor his cult was not the right one. Immediatly he gathered fifty of the best scholars in the country, masters in every sciences, in order to bring back Catherine to the faith in the gods. Underestimating the princess the fifty men found themselves beatten and convinced to join the christian faith. Emperor Maxence understanding she will not change her mind condamned her to die grinded by a breaking wheel. With the intervention of an angel the wheel broke and Catherine beheaded eventually met death. The ellongated sculpture is carved from a limewood log hollowed out in the back to prevent the apparition of cracks. This wood was especially favored by Swabian workshops because of its homogeneous appearance and of its tender and light nature allowing a very delicate carving with a nice polishing. Here it presents a particularly elegant work with the depiction of the hair worn loose, expression of her virginal youth. The braids are carved in an extraordinary double-spiral shape reminding us the refinements of her rank. Another detail appears to be revelling of the artisan’s abilities ; the way the cloak creases and shows strong folds on the right thigh without any reason. Catherine’s blue dress and red cloak highlight with their rich colours the regal rank the crown explicitely states. The book she has in her left hand, accompanying the saint in every depictions, embodies her abilities regarding dialectic, rethoric and sophism. In the other hand she holds the sword of her martyr. The face of Saint Catherine slightly giving a bow shows a large forehead, full cheeks, straight nose and small mouth with full lips, characteristics of Ulm region and particularly of Niclaus Weckmann circles. Another point comfort this hypothesis. The pair of cuts we can see marked below the base of the statue indicates a bench with a forked vice was used during the making. This tool was not unknown from the other workshops but still is a strong characteristic of weckmannian circles (Sophie Guillot de Suduinart). Made to be presented against a wall, an altar-piece’s door or a column, the posture of this Saint Catherine –legs, arms, head, hairs- nevertheless invite the collector’s gaze to turn around her. Christ’s mystical bride granted of a strong intercession power, Saint Catherine was during the end of the Middle-Ages a much revered saint and the charm with which the artisan worked tells us of this affectionnate bond.

Important Sculpture Representing Saint Barbara

IMPORTANT WOOD SCULPTURE REPRESENTING SAINT BARBARA ORIGIN : NORTHERN FRANCE OR FLANDERS PERIOD : 16th CENTURY Height: 103 cm Length: 40 cm Depth: 30 cm Oak wood Good condition Saint Barbara was the daughter of Dioscorus who imprisonned her in a tower to prevent her from being corrupted by Christianity. Despite this, she was taught and baptisted by a local priest. According to legend, she proved her faith by carving a third window into the tower, symbolic of the Trinity. Once her father learned this, he threatened her with his sword. She managed to escape and hide, not before being revealed by a sheperd. She was thrown in jail and tortured, refusing to denounce her faith. Her father forced her up to the mountain’s summit and decapitated her, afterwhich God struck him down by lightning. Virgin of Calvary
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
VIRGIN OF CALVARY ORIGIN : ITALY PERIOD : SECOND HALF 13th CENTURY Height : 75 cm Length : 19 cm Depth : 13 cm Polychrome wood carved in the round This rare sculpture of a Virgin of Calvary originally belonged to an ensemble depicting the Crucifixion. The Virgin would be accompanied by a sculpture of the apostle John, both flanking the Christ. Depictions of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus could complete the ensemble. The portrayal of the Descent from the Cross had to be a touching and moving scene for the viewer. Quite rare during the 10th and 11th centuries this particular scene of the Passion was very much in favour during the 12th century before other scenes took over in turn. Mary is standing with her head slightly tilted to her right shoulder. In a gesture of intercession she raises her left hand – note the long and delicate fingers – towards the missing Christ while with her right hand she holds her cloak around her elbow. Those calm and restrained movements break with the hieratism of Romanesque sculpture...

Saint Afre of Augsburg
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
SAINT AFRE OF AUGSBURG ORIGIN : SOUTHERN GERMANY PERIOD : 16th CENTURY Height : 119 cm Width : 50 cm Depth : 28 cm Limewood Good state of conservation Patron Saint of the city and the diocese of Augsburg, the oldest traces of her worship date back to the 6th century. There are several versions of his legend. She is sometimes identified as the daughter of a king of Cyprus whose violent and unexpected death forced her and her mother, Hilaria, to flee. They went to Augsburg via Rome. Others see her origins in Africa instead, her name meaning African in Latin. Settled in Augsburg, they became the owners of a notorious inn where they traded in their charms. Bishop Narcissus of Girona, accompanied by his deacon Felix, found refuge there one day, fleeing the persecution of Emperor Diocletian. As the two men prayed devoutly, Afre was touched by grace and asked to be baptized. She then left her old life and embraced the Christian faith. When the Roman authorities learned of his new vocation, they exhorted her to worship the old gods and to deny the Christian faith. She refused to renounce her faith and was sentenced to be burned alive. Her sentence was applied immediately and she suffered her mart...
