About the Item

Hand-carved from limewood in Germany, circa 1930, this four-and-a-half-foot tall statue depicts St Christopher carrying a young Jesus across a river. The legend states that Christopher (who was considered to have size and strength), was instructed to serve Jesus by assisting travelers with crossing a perilous river. One day a young child asked for help, and after safely reaching the far shore, Christopher complained about the child being heavier than the whole world. It was at this point that the child revealed he was Jesus before vanishing. The thick statue base has been carved with undulations and ripples, representing the river waters. Christopher has a long beard and strong muscular legs, but he is looking down and appears to be struggling, leaning heavily on the thick walking stick in his left hand. Young Jesus is sitting on his left shoulder, holding a sphere that represents the weight Christopher felt in the legend. A small six-point star that is painted blue is affixed to the top of the sphere, indicating that the child is indeed Jesus. Our tall statue was carved by a highly skilled German artist and is full of life and movement. Notice the gathered fabric and folds of Christopher’s garment, the muscular definition of his legs, and the gesture of Jesus, who appears to be encouraging Christopher onward. The statue would make a powerful statement to whichever room it is displayed. Signed by the artist “D. Neu” on the base. Measure: 4 1/2 feet tall.
