Antique Carved Marble Plaque of Attila the Hun

About the Item

A superb antique carved marble plaque of Attila the Hun. Known for being one of the most fearsome enemies the Romans ever faced, Atilla’s distinctive features are expertly carved in this marble depiction. The bottom of the plaque is inscribed Attila Be degli Unni Flagellum Dei, meaning Attila of the Huns Scourge of God. At over 140 years old, this plaque has certainly stood the test of time displaying this renowned figure in the smooth white statuary marble. The perfect piece for properties looking to appreciate legend and history from centuries ago. Mounted on a bespoke steel stand, its detail can be observed and appreciated up close. Attila the Hun Attila was one of the greatest and potentially most recognised of the barbarian rulers who assailed the Romans. This renowned character was the king of the Huns from 434 to 453, ruling jointly with his older brother Bleda until 445. In legend, it is said he invaded the southern Balkan provinces and Greece, then Gaul and Italy. Throughout their invasions, the Huns took thousands of pounds in gold from those they overtook. Roman diplomat Priscus of Panium described Attila as a short, squat man with a large head, deep-set eyes, flat nose, and a thin beard, after he visited the Huns camp in 448. This marble depiction certainly represents the barbarian with such features. Attila appears under the name Etzel in the Nibelungenlied and Atli in Icelandic sagas.
