Beautiful 19th-Century Sacred Heart of Jesus Statue in Polychrome Clay and Wood

A powerful and emotionally rich representation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, hand-carved in wood, clay and richly polychromed, dating from the late 1800s. Likely originating from France or Belgium, this devotional statue combines craftsmanship, spiritual symbolism, and historical presence.
Christ is portrayed with an open gesture and serene expression, pointing to His Sacred Heart, which radiates gold and is crowned with thorns and a small cross. The robe features Gothic-inspired motifs in crimson and gold, and the original brass halo remains intact — a rare and beautiful detail.
This large sculpture of our loving teacher Jesus Christ is in good condition, showing only minor wear and light surface imperfections that give it authenticity and soul. The paint and gilding are beautifully preserved with a soft patina, typical of well-kept devotional objects of this age.
It makes an impressive display as-is, but could become truly striking when elevated on a pedestal or large Gothic wall bracket, making it ideal for a chapel, entry hall, or interior with religious or historic accents.

In the early Nineties, John Seubert was living in a former hotel in a high-rise building on St. James Place in Chicago. The apartment was tiny, as hotel rooms tend to be, and clad with paper-thin walls allowing sound to pass from one apartment to the other. At the time, John’s artwork consisted of pounding copper sheets into tables which was a noisy endeavor to say the least. Following several noise complaints from the neighbors, John had a dream that he was living in a ramshackle house but with plenty of room to work and no attached neighbors. The following day after lunching at the McDonalds in Lincoln Park, John wandered the neighborhood a came upon a shabby, falling-down old Victorian house. He located the real estate agent, put in an offer, and weeks later was pushing a shopping cart full of his belongings to his new home.

The volunteers were called "the mud angels" because of the mud and silt left everything from the damage of the flood.
There is still the original paint and silt left on the piece to uphold the integrity, craftmanship, and history of sculptural fragment. The chalcedony rosettes perfectly emulate the color and texture of the piece.
