Clare potter porcelain basket with pink and cream roses. Measures: 12" x 12" x 13". Without any formal training, clare potter began experimenting with porcelain clay. Her passion for gardening and fascination with nature led her to her subjects: first fruits and vegetables and later flowers. She soon realized that she was following in the tradition of the great 18th century European porcelain factories. Her contemporary and more natural adaptations of these art forms are delicate and detailed arrangements that capture the beauty and imperfections of nature. Surprises of nature are her trademark and no two of her pieces are ever alike. Her work combines the finest craftsmanship with a lifetime of observation and study that results in a realism that is mesmerizing. Unlike glazed porcelains, Clare fires each piece to the bisque stage and then, painstakingly, applies multiple layers of color washes, mixed to penetrate the porous surface of the fired clay, leaving a soft, natural finish to the finely detailed creation. Over the past 20 years, Clare’s work has been featured in numerous magazines and in a number of books including Simply Flowers by Barbara Orbach, A Passion For Detail by Charlotte Moss and Floral Style by Vena Lefferts and John Kelsey. Tall collapsed vessel is a unique hand-thrown and handmade porcelain sculptural bowl by the British artist Olivia Walker. Walker begins by throwing the inner form which once leather hard, is adorned with a trail of organic ridges, all created by hand and also from porcelain. Each one is placed as if organically grown there of its own will. Walker works in porcelain to create pieces that explore ideas of growth and decay through the construction and layering of complex surfaces. All of her pieces start by being thrown on the wheel, before being built upon with thousands of individually applied fragments of porcelain. Many of her pieces are thrown and altered, often being cut away and reassembled in the leather-hard stage which allows her to deconstruct the form creating new surfaces on which to continue adding her porcelain layers. Starting from a set point on a piece, Walker lets these organic accretions spread out and grow, almost eating through, or growing over the form beneath and covering it. Walker makes reference to organisms such as fungus, corals, and bacteria but her pieces are her own interpretation, letting the viewer bring their own ideas and emotions to her pieces.
