Collection of Nine Unique Antique Green Glass Apothecary Bottles
Collection of Nine Unique Antique Green Glass Apothecary Bottles

Collection of Nine Unique Antique Green Glass Apothecary Bottles

Located in Coral Gables, FL

Exceptional collection of nine antique apothecary bottles, individually sourced and thoughtfully assembled into a striking decorative composition. The bottles vary in height, silhouette and proportion, creating a beautifully balanced arrangement of green glass with an unmistakable historical presence. The collection includes small pharmacy bottles, taller storage bottles, narrow-necked vessels and rounded forms, each reflecting the practical diversity of the traditional chemist’s shop. Their variations in size suggest that they were originally used for different preparations, quantities and dispensing purposes. Some may have held medicinal mixtures, tinctures, botanical extracts, aromatic preparations or other pharmaceutical compounds commonly prepared and sold by apothecaries. The rich green coloration is one of the most characteristic features of the group. During the 19th century, green and blue-green glass was widely used for pharmacy bottles, particularly in Europe and Britain. The color was associated with traditional apothecary glassware and, in some cases, helped protect light-sensitive contents. Green bottles were also used for substances that required visual distinction within the pharmacy, although color alone does not identify a particular medicine or poison. Ribbing, unusual shapes, special stoppers and printed or embossed warnings were often used for that purpose. These bottles belong to the world of the Victorian pharmacy, when an apothecary was simultaneously a medical practitioner, chemist, compounder and retailer. Medicines were prepared in small quantities, measured by hand and dispensed in containers selected according to the substance and the required dosage. Before standardized industrial packaging became widespread, the bottle itself was an essential part of the medical experience. Their forms also reveal the evolution of glassmaking. Many antique pharmaceutical...

Vintage James Keiller Dundee Marmalade Jars, Milk Glass, 1970s
Vintage James Keiller Dundee Marmalade Jars, Milk Glass, 1970s

Vintage James Keiller Dundee Marmalade Jars, Milk Glass, 1970s

Located in Coral Gables, FL

Beautiful pair of vintage James Keiller & Son Ltd. Dundee Seville Orange Marmalade jars, produced in Scotland and packed for Nestlé Canada Ltd., Toronto. James Keiller & Son was one of Scotland’s most important marmalade manufacturers. The company was established in Dundee in the late 18th century and became internationally recognized for its distinctive Dundee-style marmalade, traditionally made with bitter Seville oranges and finely cut strips of orange peel. The brand grew from a local Scottish enterprise into an internationally distributed food company whose products were exported throughout the British Empire and beyond. These jars represent a later chapter in that history. Made for the Canadian market, they feature the original bilingual inscriptions “Product of Scotland” and “Produit de l’Écosse,” together with the designation “Seville Orange Marmalade.” The reference to Nestlé Canada Ltd., Toronto documents the commercial relationship between the historic Scottish brand and its Canadian distributor. The bilingual labeling is an especially interesting detail, reflecting both the Canadian market and the period’s packaging requirements. The jars are made of softly colored white milk glass, with black printed lettering and an elegant botanical border. Their restrained design is characteristic of vintage food packaging: practical, recognizable and carefully branded, yet visually appealing enough to become collectible in its own right. The familiar Dundee name, the Scottish origin and the reference to Seville oranges immediately communicate the identity and quality of the product. This particular format is generally associated with the mid- to late 20th century, most likely circa the 1970s. Although much later than the original Victorian Keiller stoneware crocks, these milk-glass examples preserve the visual language and commercial identity of the historic brand while reflecting a more modern era of international food distribution. As a pair, they have a particularly strong decorative presence. Their simple cylindrical silhouettes, warm ivory glass, crisp black typography and botanical framing create a refined yet nostalgic composition. They would be beautiful displayed together on open kitchen shelving, in a pantry, on a breakfast table, in a country-house interior or incorporated into a collection of antique and vintage advertising objects. These jars are more than attractive kitchen accessories: they are tangible records of Scottish food history, international commerce and the evolution of branded packaging. They evoke the rituals of breakfast, the tradition of marmalade-making and the enduring appeal of a name that has represented Dundee marmalade...
