A beautiful example of American textile folk art, this late 19th-century Society Crazy Quilt is hand-pieced, hand-stitched, and richly embroidered. The vibrant color palette includes striking combinations of turquoise, pink, yellow, navy, and green, giving the quilt dynamic visual appeal. Elaborate herringbone embroidery connects each block, showcasing both unity and individuality in the design. Antique Mennonite American Quilt. 5 ft 3 in x 5 ft 6 in

Located in New York, NY

A beautiful and rare antique American Mennonite quilt, country of origin: America, circa 1860. Size: 5 ft 3 in x 5 ft 6 in (1.6 m x 1.68 m) This rare, Mennonite antique America quilt from the 1860’s is a real treasure, as there are few that have survived. The Mennonites are a branch of the Amish community that broke off in the 1860’s over disagreements with the Old Order Amish. The Amish are a group of Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants to America who are known for adherence to strict religious beliefs and conservative views. Their women are notably known for their skill in quilt making. This brightly colored quilt is in what is known as the log cabin pattern. The squares are made from strips of fabric stacked in a way similar to the stacking of logs used to make a log home. This particular arrangement of colors is known as “streak of lightening” and is a popular Mennonite design. This pattern alternates light and dark diagonal rows of color. The border creates a whimsical frame to the pattern. These magnificent antique American quilts were often made from scraps or clothing that had worn out its usefulness. The Mennonites were known for their thriftiness and traditions that emphasized gratitude for the gifts one had been given. These designs were not haphazard and required tremendous amounts of planning and thought. The scraps would be collected and then the colors would be arranged. Finally, the pieces would be cut and stitched together with precision to make a top. Next a fluffy, warm stuffing would be sandwiched between a backing and the top. This would be hand stitched to accentuate the design and to keep the stuffing from shifting during use. This antique Mennonite quilt...

Antique Hand-Stitched Silk Quilt, American Folk Art, 19th Century, USA

Located in Barrington, IL

Celebrate the brilliance of American folk art with this exquisite hand-stitched silk quilt from the late 19th century. Crafted with exceptional skill and care, this quilt features an ultra-modern aesthetic that echoes the iconic “piece bars” style popularized by 19th-century Mennonite quilters in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Each rectangular silk piece—measuring approximately 1” x 5”—was individually cut and stitched by hand, creating a striking geometric design that feels both timeless and avant-garde. The rich array of vibrant silk fabrics shimmers with life, making this quilt a true visual feast and a testament to the maker’s artistry and dedication. More than a textile, this quilt is a labor of love—an heirloom-quality work of art that bridges function and beauty. Due to the delicate nature of 19th-century silk, such quilts have become increasingly rare and highly collectible. Their fragility only adds to their mystique and historical value. Perfect as a wall tapestry, this handcrafted quilt is equally captivating whether displayed vertically or horizontally. Early 20th Century American Crazy Quilt in Turquoise, Pink, Yellow, Navy, Green

Located in Barrington, IL

A vibrant and visually compelling example of early American textile art, this Crazy Quilt dates to the early 1900s and showcases the rich, expressive tradition of folk craftsmanship. Composed of individually hand-cut and hand-stitched cotton and flannel pieces in vivid hues—including turquoise, pink, yellow, navy, and red—this quilt is characterized by its abstract, improvisational layout. Decorative herringbone embroidery accentuates the seams, adding texture and sophistication. The quilt is backed with soft flannel cotton, enhancing both comfort and durability. Found in New England and likely made in Pennsylvania, it reflects the ingenuity of early American makers who repurposed textiles into functional yet highly decorative works of art.
