Large Mid-Century Silvered Mercury Glass Baluster Table Lamp, circa 1970
Three pieces: one lamp, one harp, and one Finial
Elegant in both scale and simplicity, this large silvered mercury glass table lamp exemplifies the refined glamour of mid-century decorative lighting. Standing 34 inches high to the top of the finial and 23 inches to the top of the socket, the lamp features a beautifully proportioned elongated baluster or ovoid vase-form body raised on a broad 7-inch pedestal base, creating a timeless silhouette equally suited to traditional and contemporary interiors.
The mirror-like finish is achieved through the historic mercury glass technique, a process first perfected in France and Bohemia during the nineteenth century. Despite the name, authentic mercury glass contains no mercury. Instead, artisans created a brilliant reflective surface by silvering the interior of double-walled blown glass with a chemical solution, producing the luminous mirrored appearance that became one of the defining luxury finishes of the Victorian era. By the mid-twentieth century this celebrated technique was revived in cleaner, more architectural forms, such as the present example.
The understated classical profile allows the exceptional reflective surface to take center stage. Throughout the day the lamp subtly mirrors its surroundings, while at night it captures and amplifies ambient light, creating an elegant visual presence without overwhelming a room. Its restrained design makes it an ideal complement to Mid-Century Modern, Hollywood Regency, contemporary, and transitional interiors alike.
The lamp retains its original silvered finish with excellent clarity and luster. It has been professionally wired with a standard medium-base socket and includes the harp and finial shown. Vintage condition is very good overall, with only light age-related surface scratches and minor wear near the cord exit at the base consistent with decades of careful use.
A sophisticated decorative accent of generous scale, this mercury glass lamp combines classic nineteenth-century glassmaking traditions with the sleek elegance of mid-century design, making it equally striking on a console, buffet, bedside table, or library chest...
