Bio
Finnish designer Lisa Johansson-Pape enjoyed a long and varied career in lighting, furniture, textile, and ceramic design. She was one of Finland’s leading lighting designers in the 20th century and was instrumental in promoting Finnish design internationally.
Born in 1907, Lisa Johansson-Pape studied at the Industrial Art Institute in Helsinki University of Art & Design (Now Aalto University of Art & Design), graduating in 1928. She worked as a furniture designer for Kylmäkoski and Stockmann and created carpets for the Friends of Finnish Handicraft, before turning her attention to lighting design. She collaborating with the Stockmann-owned lighting factory Orno from 1942, famously remarking, “it was quite by accident that I became a design light artist. By education, I am a furniture designer, but I had to make lamps during the war.”
Notable designs include the Lisa (1947), Sipuli (1954), and Laura (1957) pendant lamps. The Sipuli, often referred to by the English translation Onion, resembles the form of the vegetable for which it was named. The angular design in opaline glass was awarded a gold medal at the Triennale di Milano in 1954, which was just one of several prizes Johansson-Pape received in her career; she was also awarded a silver medal at the 1951 Triennale...

A rare and monumental ten-tier pendant cascading chandelier by Finnish master designer Tapio Wirkkala, produced by Oy Airam AB of Finland with cased opaline glass shades. Some designs have the bulb he designed for Airam forming the diamond shape whereas in this example the opaline diamond shapes are glass shades and particularly uncommon.
Measures: 60" tall (though can be extended to much longer lengths), 19" wide.
Each pendant is 13.5" long and 5" wide and takes a 25 watt bulb. The ceiling mounting plate is 15" wide.
Cords are slightly warped only in the photo from having been packed and will settle out to be straight after a few days after being hung. See the 4th photo as the lamp was prior to removal.
Produced sometime between 1960 and mid-1970s and with ten pendants, it is one of the largest examples to be found anywhere and a very fine example of vintage modernist lighting...

A beautiful pair of commissioned floor lamps by Paul Boman/Paavo Tynell for the United Paper Mills (Yhtyneet paperitehtaat) club house in Jämsänkoski. P. Boman / Oy Taito Ab, c. late 1940s. We acquired these lamps directly from the club house.
As these lamps were commissioned for a more classic and formal place, the overall design was reflective of the settings. The lamp legs were made of wood rather than the usual brass-rattan combination. The middle part retained the Tynell hallmark brass switch "box" and is lit by 3 lamps and finally the upper part also reminds us of the Tynell classic Chinese hat lamps, but with a more formal twist. A beautiful unique pair that suits formal spaces, reading rooms and libraries, or any interior with a classic vibe.
The United Paper Mills is an important company in Finnish industrial history that helped build and shape industrial towns around Finland. The company is now a multi-billion euro firm that is still functioning. The Jämsänkoski deputy's manor house that was turned into the company's club house, to where these lamps were commissioned, hosted endless important meetings and parties and accommodated many prominent state visitors such as Princess Ann...
