William Spratling 1940s Mexican Butaque Chair

By William Spratling

Located in San Francisco, CA

This piece reeks of adventure. Visualize a seated Hemmingway cupping his Daiquiri and recalling his war correspondent days during the Spanish Civil War. Crafted of solid sabino wood, original and patinated by life like Hemmingway, this is a "Butaque" chair by the American-born designer William Spratling. And it was produced in his workshops in Taxco, Mexico, primarily in the 1940s and 1950s. While Spratling is widely known as the "Father of Mexican Silver" for reviving the town's silver industry, he also designed furniture. These chairs were handmade from local Mexican sabino wood...

Edo period wooden carved Buddhist statue/11-faced Thousand-armed Kannon
Edo period wooden carved Buddhist statue/11-faced Thousand-armed Kannon

Edo period wooden carved Buddhist statue/11-faced Thousand-armed Kannon

Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba

This is a wooden statue of **Jūichimen Senju Kannon Bosatsu (Eleven-Headed Thousand-Armed Kannon)**, created in Japan during the late Edo period. Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon), formally known as *Senju Sengen Kanzeon Bosatsu*, is regarded as a symbol of compassion who saves all people through countless hands and eyes. Rather than literally carving one thousand arms, the expression of many arms symbolically represents “infinite salvation.” This work is further rendered in the **Eleven-Headed (Jūichimen)** form, bearing multiple faces above the main head. This signifies the ability to look in all directions and to never overlook the suffering of any being. The Eleven-Headed Thousand-Armed Kannon is both refined in design and highly significant in devotional practice. At **Sanjūsangendō (Rengeō-in)** in Kyoto, a similar Eleven-Headed Thousand-Armed Kannon statue is enshrined and is widely known as one of the representative masterpieces of Japanese Buddhist sculpture...

By Guthrie and Wells, Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Located in London, GB

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928), made by Guthrie and Wells. A Glasgow School Arts and Crafts stained green cypress wood wardrobe, with white opaque textured square glass details to the top. The central door and a large lower drawer with brass heart escutcheons and brass stylized foliate hinges and handles. The simple case construction and stained green cypress wood and grouping of square details are typical of Mackintosh's early work for Guthrie and Wells including items bought by William Davidson for his house Gladsmuir, Kilmacolm. The brass cabinet fittings are identical on a number of pieces, see Billcliffe, p. 33, fig. 1895.2 and 1895.3 for a washstand and dressing table designed by Mackintosh, also made by Guthrie and Wells. Also a white painted wardrobe/compactum. The overhanging cornice has been adapted with hinged flaps to move it up a narrow staircase. Japanese Kamakura Cypress Wood Pair of Komainu Temple Guardians, 13th Century
Japanese Kamakura Cypress Wood Pair of Komainu Temple Guardians, 13th Century

Japanese Kamakura Cypress Wood Pair of Komainu Temple Guardians, 13th Century

Located in New York, NY

Japanese Kamakura Period Pair of Carved Cypress Shishi (Komainu) Temple Guardians An exceptional and exceedingly rare pair of Japanese carved cypress wood Shishi (Komainu) dating to the Kamakura period (1185–1333). Originally created as guardian figures for the entrance of a Shinto shrine or Buddhist temple, these imposing sculptures embody the powerful spiritual symbolism and remarkable sculptural achievements of medieval Japan. Surviving examples from the Kamakura period are exceptionally scarce, particularly as a matched pair retaining such strong sculptural presence. Masterfully carved from solid Japanese cypress (hinoki), each guardian is depicted seated in an alert and commanding posture, conveying both strength and vigilance. Their boldly modeled heads feature dramatically expressive faces with deeply carved eyes, broad noses, and powerful open mouths that radiate protective energy. The robust bodies display muscular proportions softened by elegantly stylized carving, while the sweeping tails and finely incised manes provide a lively sense of movement and rhythm. The beautifully weathered surface reveals the warm natural grain of the ancient cypress, enhancing the sculptures' authenticity and timeless character. Known in Japan as Komainu, these guardian creatures traditionally stand in pairs at the entrances to Shinto shrines and important temples, serving as sacred protectors against evil spirits and misfortune. One figure typically represents the sound "A", with its mouth open, symbolizing the beginning of all things, while the companion forms the sound "Un", with its mouth closed, signifying the end of existence. Together they represent the eternal cycle of creation and completion, a profound philosophical concept deeply rooted in Japanese religious tradition. The Kamakura period is widely regarded as one of the great golden ages of Japanese sculpture. During this era, artists achieved an unprecedented level of realism, vitality, and expressive power, producing some of the finest religious carvings in Japanese history. The bold forms and confident execution of this pair reflect the artistic innovations that made Kamakura sculpture...

Rare Japanese antique wooden god statue /12th century/small wabi-sabi figurines

Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba

I was able to obtain a very rare item. This is a sculpture of the god ``Shinzo''. "Shin" = God "zo" = statue Since ancient times in Japan, it has been believed that gods reside in all things in the universe, and there have been many shrines. In the 6th century, Buddhism was introduced and gradually spread throughout Japan. Around the 8th century, the idea that gods follow the teachings of Buddha spread. Until the Edo period, God and Buddha became one and the idea of ``Shinto and Buddhism syncretism'' was established. This statue was created during such a history. Originally, the image of God was invisible and could not be understood as something tangible. However, with the introduction of Buddhism to Japan, idol worship was also introduced, and the idea that the gods follow the teachings of Buddha was also propagated at the same time in order to spread the teachings of Buddhism. Around that time, around the 9th century, the first statues of gods...
