Reproduced from the original which currently hangs in Wetherburn's Tavern in Williamsburg, Virginia. An elegant mirror with beveled glass plate surrounded by raised scalloped and foliate details. Features an open pediment with Prince of Wales cartouche. Although Wetherburn's Tavern evolved in somewhat the same manner as the Raleigh, its survival gives it a greater sense of veracity than its more famous competitor. It began in the 1740s as a five-bay house or tavern with a pair of rooms on both sides of the stair passage. A delightful George I Period giltwood and gesso wall mirror of attractive proportions, having replaced old mirror plate within strapwork decorated scrolling frame, surmounted by wonderful carved shell with foliate decoration to top and attractive reverse carved shell to bottom. Gesso is a type of plaster that is prepared of finely ground chalk, applied onto the wooden surface in a series of layers. This could then be used for the maker to create elaborate, different designs by cutting into the newly created surface.
