Marvel Comics Library, X-Men, Vol. 1, 1963–1966, Famous First Edition Book
Located in Los Angeles, CA
The Strangest Super-Heroes of All. The foundation of a pop-culture phenomenon. When Marvel publisher Martin Goodman asked Stan Lee to deliver another new team book for his line of comics, he had no idea he’d be getting something like The X-Men. In fact, nobody could have imagined the extraordinary phenomenon the X-Men would eventually grow into—not Goodman, not Lee, not even the forward-thinking futurist Jack Kirby. What they started out as was a charming, ragtag team of misfits, devised by Lee and Kirby to be mutants—youngsters born with “X-tra” powers thrust upon them not by accidentally crossing paths with cosmic rays or a nuclear blast, but by the fate of birth—led by a no-nonsense professor who trained them to become heroes that could protect the world from menaces, mutant and otherwise. The first years of storytelling laid the foundation for much of what has put the X-Men at the crossroads of comics and popular culture: Hounded by a public that fears and misunderstands them, mutantkind find themselves at the heart of their own civil rights struggle; Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Beast, and Iceman found safety amongst themselves despite the challenges that set them apart from others in society; and Professor Xavier lined up against his ideological foe, Magneto, who had assembled a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to take the fight for their self-preservation directly to humankind. Along the way, Lee and Kirby—who were on fire taking comics into the Marvel Age—introduced a menagerie of villains and supporting characters that would become mainstays of Marvel and its lore: the super-powered siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch; the formidable Blob; the unstoppable Juggernaut; the jungle dweller from the Savage Land, Ka-Zar; the demigod from the stars, the Stranger; and Bolivar Trask and his army of mutant-hunting Sentinels. And as Lee and Kirby gave way to new talents so they could move on to new corners of the Marvel Universe, Atlas era art veteran Werner Roth teamed with writing newcomer and future X-Men legend Roy Thomas...

Yves Thomas, Waves and Storms, French Artist-Painter Book, by Yves Thomas, 2011
Located in Atlanta, GA
Yves Thomas, Vagues et Tempetes (Waves and Storms), French-English book by Yves Thomas, 2011. Yves Thomas is a recognized listed French artist born in Normandy, France, in 1937. The most beautiful works of Yves Thomas have something musical, sonata, and symphony mingle in the light of the painting. The black rocks declined in purple-gray, are like the shadows of a mysterious world whose surprising beauty we can observe. In these "visionary" paintings, everything evokes the passage of time, from the wear and tear of stones to stranded ships. And yet, the light of the artwork escapes this erosion so much it is alive and plays with its timelessness. Islands, reefs, and rocks do not belong to any identifiable country. Only light gives life and meaning to these landscapes taken from the soul. This light merges with time which gives birth to these spaces. This time-light stands at the heart of emotion itself. This spiritual time haunts us with its intrinsic presence and escapes the intellect to exist better. It offers the spectator the possibility of becoming clairvoyant in turn. The art of Yves Thomas is an invitation to an inner journey but also the authentic testimony of an artist working beyond fashions and having been able to remain faithful to his dreams. He allowed the light of his paintings to flourish. Through the miracle of creation, Yves Thomas bears witness to the light of our dreams. (credit: Artthomparis) About the Artist: At the age of 14, Yves Thomas copied a large painting by Antoine Jean Gros, named "The plague-stricken of Jaffa," in the Louvre Museum Yves Thomas readily admits that "the result was not completely satisfactory" but, coming out of adolescence, he mastered drawing. At 17, Yves Thomas joined the French Navy for five years. One can imagine the artist scrutinizing the ocean waves and attempting to capture their moving forms in his sketchbooks. During this period, he discovered and practiced "The Camera Lucida" technique assiduously. An increasingly rigorous design naturally leads to his "Ingres" period. Open to different trends and curious by nature, Yves Thomas began, a few years after, abstract paintings and then returned to a hyperrealistic drawing...

David Hockney Portraits by Sarah Howgate & Barbara Stern Shapiro (Book)
Located in North Yorkshire, GB
David Hockney is one of the most significant artists exploring and pushing the boundaries of figurative art today. He has been engaged with portraiture since his teenage years, when he painted Portrait of My Father (1955), and portraits of family, lovers, friends and well-known subjects represent an intimate visual diary of the artist's life. This authoritative new study examines Hockney's portraits in all media - painting, drawing, photocollage and prints - and is produced in close collaboration with the artist. Together, the authors reveal how Hockney's creative development and concerns about representation can be traced through his portrait work: from his iconic double portraits of the late 1960s and early 1970s to his cubist-influenced investigations of the 1980s and from his recent camera lucida...

Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, E. Fitzgerald translation, Club Bindery
Located in Middletown, NY
From the library of John A. Spoor an elegantly bound Rubáiyát by Club Bindery. Omar Khayyám, Translated by Edward Fitzgerald. Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám; The Astronomer-Poet of Persia. Rendered into English Verse. London: Bernard Quaritch, 1872. Third Edition. 8vo, 8 1/4 x 6 inches (210 x 153 mm); xxiv, 36, (xiv) pp. Beautiful dark maroon morocco binding by Club Bindery 1892 (gold stamped on bottom of inside cover), gilt titling and gilt fillets on turn-ins and board edges, marbled endpapers, t.e.g. Pictorial bookplate of John A. Spoor 1921 on inside front cover by Emery Walker. Elegantly printed with text within decorative frames on each page. Spine lightly rubbed, small tear to the inside front endpaper. [Potter, 137] Condition: Near Fine Edward Fitzgerald continually revised and rearranged his version of the Rubáiyát, which was first published privately by the author in 1859, through four distinct editions during his lifetime. This third edition settled on 101 quatrains (as opposed to 75 in the first edition and 110 in the second), which is how it solidified. 500 copies were printed. A RARITY. In this third edition the translator is not credited on the title page, nor is the introductory text. Fitzgerald said of his Persian translations that they were "All very well, but very little affairs..." (from the Bibliographical Note in the 1926 Shakespeare Head Press edition, which we are offering, inventory #416) This copy bears the bookplate of Chicago business mogul John A. Spoor. An avid book collector, he assembled a notable and impressive book collection during the late 19th and early 20th century, which was auctioned in 1939 by Parke-Bernet New York over the course of 6 days. The Morgan Library holds a number of books with the Spoor bookplate in its collections. This bookplate was engraved by Emery Walker (1851 – 1933), an engraver, publisher and photographer active in the Arts and Crafts movement, whose work in type design inspired the evolution of private presses in the UK, among them William Morris' Kelmscott...

Synthesis: Lost & Found in America: the Art of Vesna Kittelson Stated 1st Ed
Located in valatie, NY
Synthesis: Lost and Found in America: The Art of Vesna Kittelson by Vesna Kittelson. Afton Historical Society Press Published 2020. Stated 1st Ed with dust jacket. "Vesna Kittelson grew up in the ancient Roman city of Split in Croatia. After finishing her law degree in Split she moved to Cambridge, England, and later to the US. She studied art at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities where she obtained a bachelor's degree in Studio Arts and a master's degree in Design. She continues to live, work and exhibit her paintings in the Twin Cities, England and Croatia. Her primary themes in painting can be grouped into four or five categories: early work consisting of large cutout paper abstractions, followed by a body of figurative work entitled I, after that she combined figurative and abstract thinking in Lost And Found In America (contemplation on the strangeness of being an immigrant), and most recently she has developed a body of self-portraits and portraits. Vesna taught painting in the Fine Arts Department and in the Graduate Program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. She was the recipient of the Bush Fellowship for painting, and several Minnesota State Arts Grants and she was granted an open studio day sponsored by the Walker Art Center. She is a member of the co-op Traffic Zone Center for the Visual Arts and in the past was a member of the feminist co-op WARM. The series of portraits, Young Americans, is an open-ended project of painting young people between 20 and 30 years of age. These paintings are fragments, just a face, painted in oil on paper, cut to be placed directly on a wall. Conceptually, the cutout form derives from my childhood experience of growing up in the ancient Roman city of Split, Croatia, where I was literally surrounded by fragments of...

Antique and Vintage Books

Antique and vintage books add a sense of culture and style to any room. Displaying these types of books in your living room or reading nook can warm a space with a distinguished feel.

Several factors make antique books highly desirable. Original jackets, ornate binding, illustrations and quality of the print all contribute to making a vintage book special. Rare books are of great interest to collectors in the know and can command high prices at auction. In 2021, an important early artist book by Andy Warhol sold at auction for more than $106,000. Somewhere between all the commercial work he did as an ambitious young graphic designer in the early 1950s and his first real debut as a Pop artist a decade later, Warhol produced a trove of incredibly charming drawings. His illustrated self-published artist books from the 1950s are very rare.

Many collectors seek the first edition of certain books. Fewer copies of a book and higher demand make it a rare find. A book that contains the author’s signature also makes it much more prized than other examples of the same title.

Collectors and designers decorate rooms with vintage books for a cozy feeling in a home. Coffee-table books, such as those featuring photography and design, serve as conversation pieces or offer a relaxing moment when leafed through.

Interior designers look for vintage books when they want to add color or detail. For instance, leather-bound books can create a scholarly air while mid-century titles offer a modern edge. Vintage international books or first editions can provide a sense of history.

No matter the genre, there is a book for you. You can find rare, one-of-a-kind antique books on 1stDibs. Browse by authors, like celebrated architect and designer Frank Lloyd Wright and Edgar Rice Burroughs, as well as by period, including mid-century modern, Art Deco and Victorian.
