Vintage Traditional Batuan Gambuh Painting by Sudana of Batuan, Bali.
A large sumptuous narrative painting in shaded colors on a framed and stretched canvas rendering a composite of scenes of figures in preparation for a Gambuh Balinese dance drama. The female dance figures have floral headdresses and are preparing with makeup and costuming with sarong clad men as attendants. A box in the foreground contains a Keris and a dance mask for the character Arya, a principle role in the Gambuh performance. The background includes an architectural overhang, a bedroom and temple grounds with other maidens in attendance. Often the Gambuh is performed as part of wedding festivities. The canvas is stretched on a wood frame and further framed by a Western style black lacquered wood frame with a beige silk covered mat. Framing by Valley Arts, Palm Desert, CA.
