Chinese Slatted Back Bench, c. 1900

About the Item

This charming bench from the early 20th century comfortably seats three and combines the proportions of Western furniture with the decorative opulence of Qing-dynasty designs. Crafted of elm with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the three-person bench features a slatted back with inset carvings, low arm rails, a solid wood seat and straight corner legs. The long bench delights with a decorative detail everywhere you look. Vertical spindles along the back are enclosed by a chain of coins, surrounded by low-relief carvings finished with colorful lacquer and flecks of mica. The arms are carved with geometric meanders and scrolled ends, elevated by vertical supports shaped as a double gourd, a symbol of health, and a basket of flowers, a symbol of longevity. And the waisted rectangular seat is adorned with an openwork apron of simple scrollwork, braced by carvings of delicate blossoms. The bench is supported by thin, splayed legs linked by stretchers with mortise-and-tenon joinery, without the use of nails or screws.
