JamesPlumb is a creative studio launched in London in 2009 by James Russell (born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1980) and Hannah Plumb (born in Surrey, England in 1981). Inspired by the overlooked, the timeworn, and the paradoxical—as well as “a love of unorthodox and unconventional beauty”—the studio creates one-off and limited-edition lighting and furniture as well as interiors for commercial and private clients.
JamesPlumb’s aesthetic is steeped in the love of unorthodox and unconventional beauty. The strange allure of accidental geometry, and perfection interrupted. They are drawn to that which is shaped by time. The unique visual and tactile experience of the handmade, imperfect, aged, park aged and one-of-a-kind is inherent to their work. Exposing the impossibility of permanence and myth of perfection is at the heart of their production. Their objects and environments become enriched with the complex patina of time and life. That which cannot be replicated is the object of their desire. They admire the obsessively handmade and time consuming. They instinctively reject the mass produced, the conventionally perfect, and that which offers only surface attraction. They love that which is in perpetual evolution. For them, beauty glows soft in the deepest, darkest but most beautiful human plains. In this way, their production mirrors a real, human beauty - the imperfect and fleeting nature of the human experience and body is elevated above the ideals of modernism. Their work is often described as a new type of Romanticism.
JamesPlumb’s often subtly humorous work spans art and design, and frequently repurposes or draws motivation from historic and found objects. Notable projects to date include burnished Indigo (2014), a lighting and furniture collection inspired by a damaged 19th century leather sofa...
