A classic B33 cantilever chair designed by Marcel Breuer, featuring a polished chrome-plated tubular steel frame with natural canvas seat and backrest. The chair retains its original Knoll International label. Originally designed by Breuer in the late 1920s, the B33 is an important example of Bauhaus and International Style furniture design, reflecting the period's experimentation with tubular steel and the elimination of conventional rear chair legs. The continuous cantilevered frame creates a remarkably light architectural profile while providing the subtle flexibility characteristic of this type of construction. The natural canvas upholstery provides a warm contrast to the polished chrome frame. Particularly distinctive is the back, where the canvas panel is secured with exposed corset-style lacing, emphasizing the functional construction and machine-age aesthetic of the design. Breuer's tubular steel furniture helped define the vocabulary of early European Modernism, and the B33 shares its design lineage with the cantilever furniture of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Mart Stam, as well as Modernist works by Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand. Its clean geometry makes the chair equally appropriate for Bauhaus, Mid-Century Modern, International Style, minimalist, contemporary, and industrial interiors. The chair retains its vintage natural canvas upholstery, which shows discoloration, staining, marks, and wear from age and use. The chrome-plated tubular steel frame shows scratches, oxidation, finish losses, and other age-related wear. These condition details are clearly documented in the photographs. Very rare and collectible Eames & Saarinen "Organic Chair", winner of Organic Design competition at MoMa. First manufacture from the early 1950s, laminated and moulded wooden seat shell, foam upholstery which was covered with textile fabric designed by Marli Ehrman. A special patented joint holds the wood legs firmly to the shell. Originals of the organic from the 1950s are collector's items and exhibited in museums. They are also traded on art auctions, where one was sold in 1999 for $ 120.000 in bed condition. (take a look at the picture) Designed for the “Organic Design” competition by Museum of Modern Art in New York on 1 October 1940. The competition was initiated by Elliot Noyes, the first curator of this newly installed department. The goal was to motivate architects and companies to develop and market modern furniture for a modern lifestyle. Their participation in the MoMa competition was the first collaboration between Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames, and they won first prize. Besides the chair, their submission comprised a high-back chair, an armchair, a sofa, and office furniture, which they presented in the form of several drawings. No true-to-scale prototypes were produced for the competition. Production of the “Organic Chair” only started in 1950 and was terminated after a short while. The original design had envisaged aluminium legs. This idea was discarded because the material was scarce during the war, and wood was used instead. New technologies were also involved in the production of the seat shell, which was composed of strips of veneer and was to ensure utmost stability and comfort while using as little material as possible and being extremely lightweight. This is a superb hardwood walnut, side or dining chair which we date to the mid 18th century, George 111rd period, circa 1760. The chair has a very well carved back splat consisting of vertical interconnected ribbons with good detail. The top rail has a serpentine crest with central crisply carved detail with an acorn motif and well formed & carved ears with rosettes. The pegged and jointed legs are square with an inside chamfer back and front and the front legs are flute molded to match the side rails, with dovetailed "H" cross-stretchers. It has a drop-in seat which has been newly upholstered and webbed but could easily be upholstered in a fabric of choice. The proportion of this chair is excellent with very good width and a good rake to the backs and rear legs. The hardwood has developed a beautiful mellow colour and patina with age and polishing over the years. Overall a fine quality, English Georgian dining chair.
