About the Item

Carlo Scarpa (1906–1978) was one of the most poetic and materially sensitive architects of the 20th century. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, Scarpa developed a deeply personal approach that bridged modernism with traditional Italian craftsmanship. Rather than embracing industrial uniformity, he focused on exquisite detailing, often collaborating closely with artisans to produce highly refined, tactile spaces. Scarpa is best known for projects like the renovation of the Castelvecchio Museum in Verona and the Brion Cemetery in San Vito d’Altivole. His work is characterized by a masterful use of materials—stone, glass, concrete, brass—combined in unexpected yet harmonious ways. He paid extraordinary attention to how light interacts with surfaces and how visitors move through space, often choreographing sequences of thresholds, steps, and views. His influence extends beyond architecture into exhibition design and furniture, where his sensitivity to proportion and joinery remains highly admired. Today, Scarpa is celebrated for redefining modern architecture through craftsmanship, memory, and an almost obsessive devotion to detail.
