French 18th Century Walnut Commode Chest
About the Item
An Extremely Attractive Late 18th Century French, Louis XVI Period, Walnut Commode Chest, Having Well Figured Top Over Serpentine Shaped Front, With Three Reverse Graduated Drawers Retaining Exceptional Original Brass Handles, Flanked By Panelled Sides And Raised On Elegant Original Cabriole Feet With Attractive Shaped Apron.
The french definition of a commode is actually a low cabinet or chest of drawers which stands on short cabriole or similar legs or feet. In general terms the shape of french commodes was more elaborate the earlier that they were made and as we progressed through the 19th century the normal shape became significantly straighter than the normal 18th century shape.
One relatively common and normal design feature for a French commdoe is for it to be larger in widths than height. This allows for great elegance as well as practicality when stood against the wall to provide convenient storage for personal items. In most homes commodes of varying shapes, sizes and qualities took prominent positions both downstairs and upstairs, quickly becoming must have pieces of furniture for just about any home.
This 18th century french commode chest is particularly nice for a number of reasons. It retains a good warm colour to the walnut used for its construction and of course the serpentine shape adds real elegance to it. The commode also remains in very good condition with just the expected historic marks, scrapes and scuffs which have now blended nicely into the overall patina and are of course what one would expect to find on a practical item of this age.
One absolute standout feature of this commode is of course the handles. They are very much original and of a detailed design which we have not come across before, but they really do lift the piece and make it interesting as well as attractive and functional. The short legs, or feet, are also original and the piece has been inspected by our restorers receiving a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. Please note that there are no locks for this piece, the locks have been removed at some point a very long time ago and there are just empty spaces where they previously stood which is very common.

In general kneehole deeks are regarded as a smaller, more compact version of the more typically found pedestal desk, with some form of an arrangement of drawers around a central set recessed cupboard being the typically found form. There are of course various different designs to be found along the same theme, but as a general rule that is the form you will usually find in a georgian kneehole desk...
