Expertly crafted from solid teak, this Fonseca dining table was originally produced for Heals and exemplifies the refined design aesthetic A Younger was celebrated for. The table features an elegant fixed-top surface with softly tapered edges and gracefully arched under-frame support, hallmarks of Herbert’s design style. With dimensions of 182 cm in length, 78 cm in width, and standing 73 cm tall, this spacious table comfortably seats six, offering two chairs on either side and room for a carver chair at each end.
Mid Century Dining Set
One of the most functional features of this mid-century dining table is its slim, narrowing ends—perfect for space-saving in smaller dining rooms or open-plan areas. The chairs tuck in fully underneath the table, allowing the set to be pushed neatly against a wall when not in use, making it ideal for modern living.
The accompanying set of six Fonseca dining chairs, also designed by John Herbert for A Younger, beautifully complements the table. Crafted in the same solid teak and freshly upholstered in a premium grey fabric, these chairs offer an ergonomic, supportive design ideal for everyday dining or entertaining. Their clean lines and subtle curves create a sense of understated sophistication, blending seamlessly into both mid-century modern and contemporary interiors.
A Younger was known for producing high-end, low-volume furniture in Britain throughout the 1950s and 60s, focusing on quality over quantity. As part of their coveted Fonseca range, this table and chair set is a rare find, particularly in such outstanding condition.
Condition:
This wonderful dining table was discovered in an old barn at a country house in Bath, where it was covered in car oil; we believe it had been used as a workbench. It has been revitalised in our workshop and is now ready to be used and cherished for another 100 years. The table is in great used condition, with the top completely refurbished and stained to match the original Younger chairs. Minor marks and wear are present, consistent with its age and authenticity. The chairs are structurally sound, fully restored, reupholstered, and ready for immediate use.

🔎 Provenance Story
We found this Fonseca dining set in a rather unexpected state — tucked away in a draughty outbuilding on the edge of a country house estate near Bath. Covered in dust, tools, and a slick of car oil, the table had seen life far beyond the dining room. At some point, someone had repurposed this mid-century masterpiece as a makeshift workbench. It was forgotten, but not lost.
What caught our eye was the silhouette — that unmistakable Herbert curve beneath the tabletop, even under the grime. We knew immediately it was Fonseca, and we knew it deserved to be saved.
Back in our Sussex workshop, we carefully stripped, sanded, and restored the table by hand, preserving its original shape and re-staining the surface to harmonise with the matching set of original A Younger chairs we’d been holding for just the right piece. The chairs have been fully reupholstered in a modern grey fabric, striking that balance between vintage integrity and contemporary style.
What we love about this set isn’t just its rarity or the elegance of the design — it’s the transformation. It’s a story of survival and renewal, of British craftsmanship brought back to life with care. And now, it’s ready for its next chapter around your table.
