About the Item
This small table or stool features a new wooden base mated to an old terra cotta tile top. The traditional floors of Chinese mansions were made from terracotta tiles laid in a grid. Terracotta was a lighter, easily-worked alternative to stone. Fine wind-blown loess provided the clay material and on the plains of Northern China, it is gray-black in color, not red-yellow as we expect terra cotta to be. The black tiles were also used outdoors in dry northern areas, where their dark color helped them to dry out quickly in the sun.
The legs of the table are very thick and made from reclaimed elm wood, covered in black lacquer. A fragment of a much larger antique terra cotta tile was used for the top. The tile has been cust, sanded, polished and waxed for maximum beauty. Though small, the table or stool is rare and special and blends very well with contemporary decor.
