French 1940s René Prou Style Gilt Iron Coffee Table
By René Prou
Located in Saint Louis, MO
Classic Parisian charm oozes from this 1940s French René Prou style Coffee Table with its whimsical gilded curves and upper crust profile. Fanciful. Ornate. The perfect choice to anchor that Upper East Side living room. Simply add some interesting table books and a wonderfully scented floral arrangement and voilà - c'est si tres bon! Gilded beautifully with rich golden tones. Center emblem is reminiscent of a four leaf clover and is framed with an oval border. Legs curve like a chic signature and rest atop ball feet. This table gives a feeling of constant movement and flow, precisely what made René Prou's pieces so unique and sought after. Console Art Deco
Material: Wood and glass and gold
Comte (1932-1960) was a design house and the most important manufacturer and importer of furniture and decorative objects in Argentina during the middle of the 20th century. Comte produced furniture in both the English and French styles of the 19th and 20th centuries.1
1932-1936: Training and early years
The Comte company was founded in 1932 by Ignacio Pirovano, his brother Ricardo Pirovano and the architects José Enrique Tívoli and Mariano Mansilla Moreno. Later, Celina Pirovano, also an architect and wife of Ricardo Pirovano, would join Comte.2 The main creative force behind Comte was Ignacio Pirovano, who in turn was inspired by Jean-Michel Frank, whom he met in 1920, and his gallery located in Paris on his constant trips to this city. Ricardo Pirovano acted as president of the company and managed the administrative part of the company.3
During its first four years of existence, Comte was located at Avenida Roque Sáenz Peña 1129 and was dedicated to the import, execution and sale of fine furniture and decorative accessories,2 among which were found many pieces of European origin, for later sale. sale to his high society clientele in Buenos Aires.
1936-1942: Company growth
On March 30, 1936, the company moved to 10792 Arenales Street and signed an exclusivity agreement with Jean-Michel Frank to produce his designs in the country.3 The French designer served as artistic director of the company. for an indeterminate period.3 At this stage the company specializes in furniture and decorations, carpets, wood coverings and in general everything related to the authorization of the most important works of large departments of the State, public and private companies, both from the country as well as from abroad.2 As examples we can mention the Llao Llao Hotel in Bariloche, Argentina, the Mar del Plata Casino, in Mar del Plata, Argentina and the Banco de la República del Paraguay in Asunción, Paraguay.
During that period, several studios were opened: the first in 1937 located at 1164 Segurola Street, the second at 451 Paramaribo (current Fragata Sarmiento Street), quickly followed by new addresses at 1281 Avellaneda, 1536/40 Paseo Colón Avenue, 535 Darwin /43, Francisco Acuña de Figueroa 855 and Deán Funes 1832.2 This reflects the incredible growth of Comte and the company's production capacity. In 1939 Comte moved to 953 Florida Street, where it had an exhibition hall and sales to the public.2
1942-1960s: Expansion into other areas and final years
On April 27, 1942, Comte was officially transformed into a Public Limited Company, with an authorized capital of m$n 600,000. For that year, it occupied the imposing premises on 936/40 Florida Street, where it would operate until the end of 1954, when it moved its commercial address to 1832 Deán Funes Street, where it had its industrial establishment.2 By 1946, it centralized all its operation in this last address, to which another location was added located at 1877.2 Luca Street. Consequently, with the experience acquired by organizing its aeronautical section and when the contracts corresponding to this section were suspended, it dedicated itself to preparing its plant for the lines of wooden cabinets in series specializing in cabinets for T.V., radios, transistor radios, combined, stereophonic, tables for sewing machines, among others.2
The company finally closed its doors sometime in the 1960s after the death of one of its founders, Ricardo Pirovano.
Commercial items used
Three types of commercial items were used by Comte: COMTE S.R.L., COMTE S.A. and COMTE S.A.I.yC. Initially the company was formed as an S.R.L. in the year 19322 (Limited Liability Company) dedicated mainly to the import of furniture from Europe. Around 1937, Comte expanded and formed a second company under the name S.A.2 (Sociedad Anónima) that would be used mainly for the manufacture of furniture and decorative objects under the exclusivity of both national artists (such as Alejandro Bustillo...

70sGuy Lefevre black and golden Coffetable, Sofatable, France
By Guy Lefevre
Located in Valladolid, ES
Amazing coffe table in black lacquered and gilded wood ,rectangular profile with 4 legs and a table top in lacquer with gold by Guy Lefevre for Maison Jansen .Its symmetry and its architectural design combine to create a pleasant sensation of the 70s. Its look is minimalist and elegant, offering a timeless, simple yet sophisticated look, characteristic of Guy Lefevre's work
Born in Madagascar to Reunionese parents, Guy Lefèvre has spent his entire career as a stained glass artist in the Indian Ocean, in Madagascar, Reunion and Mauritius.
Paris-based design firm Maison Jansen was one of the most well-known and influential interior decorating houses of the 20th century, patronized by royalty, socialites, leaders of nations, and other luminaries of elite society. It was also one of the first truly global design firms.
Founded in 1880 by Dutch designer Jean-Henri Jansen (1854-1928), Maison Jansen originally sourced existing antiques or contracted outside cabinetmakers to produce furniture when producing custom interiors for clients. By the 1890s, however, the firm began to manufacture furnishings in-house. Soon, Maison Jansen’s luxury, traditional-style pieces earned an international reputation. Their most sought-after pieces reflected the influence of erstwhile designs from the Louis XIV, Louis XVI, Directoire, and Empire eras, as well as objects Jansen encountered during his travels to Japan and Turkey.
By the 1920s, Maison Jansen had offices around the world, including London, New York, Buenos Aires, Havana, Cairo, Prague, Rome, and Rio de Janeiro. During the early 1920s, Stéphane Boudin (1888-1967) joined Jansen as the chief designer and director. His attention to detail, concern for historical accuracy, and ability to create dramatic and memorable spaces brought ever-more work to the firm. Among his many projects, Boudin was responsible the renovations of the White House—including the Red Room, designed in collaboration with Paul Manno—during the administration of John F. Kennedy.
By the 1930s, Maison Jansen’s five-story, Paris atelier employed over 700 highly skilled artisans and would go on to employ many famous designers, including Pierre Delbée (1900-1974), Carlos Ortiz-Cabrera, Francis Chaillou, Serge Robin, Henri Samuel, Claude Mandron, and Arthur Kouwenhoven.
Maison Jansen’s design aesthetic was forward-thinking and counter-cultural, even as the firm came to specialize in high-end reproductions. Among the many styles Maison Jansen’s furniture and interiors drew from are 18th-century Bourbon Court, the Aesthetic Movement, Art Nouveau, Art Moderne, and even midcentury modernism. The firm’s genius lay in mining the past for forms, colors, and materials that were sure to make an impact.
Maison Jansen was commissioned by an array of impressive clients, including William III of the Netherlands, Alfonso XII of Spain, the Duke & Duchess of Windsor, King Leopold II of Belgium, the Shah of Iran, the oil magnate Charles Bierer Wrightsman, Leed’s Castle, Hotel Parr in Vienna, the German Reichsbank, the Rockefellers, Bartolomé March, Coco Chanel, Elsie de Wolfe, and the Kennedys, among many others.
In 1989, sixty years after the death of its founder, Maison Jansen closed its doors. Today, Maison Jansen’s designs are highly sought-after by collectors, fetching high prices at auction that range between $5,000 and $20,000—though it is not uncommon to see even higher prices. The most valuable and collectible examples of Maison Jansen furniture are 18th-century antiques that were appropriated and re-upholstered by Maison Jansen in the late-19th century. To date, the record for highest priced Maison Jansen piece was set at Christie’s in London in 2005, when a suite of Louis XVI...
