FRENCH EMPIRE STYLE ORMOLU MOUNTED MARBLE TOP SIDE TABLE
France c. 1900, Over Lion Paw Sabots
This is an inordinately attractive and well detailed marble top stand in the French Empire taste. The gilt ormolu mounts are positively exceptional, each crisply chased and of utmost quality - along the frame, each panel retains an original foliate mount with intricately cast leaves with flowing foliage twisted in a wreath and flowing outward in what appear to be long laurel branches. Each leg is flanked by a triangular anthemion and is mounted with a bold rosette over a long draping display of flowers and acanthus. The legs are locked in place with a shaped stretcher, this surmounted by a raised laurel wreath with four Empire stars (one replaced), the edges of the stretcher embellished with beautiful rosettes flowing outward into anthemion and acanthus formations. Each leg is embellished with a single rosette opposite the stretcher and terminates in a Lion Paw sabot with handsome toes and sharp claws.
The frame and stretcher are both a wonderful display of mahogany veneers, the legs and gallery around the marble top being carved of solid mahogany. It is an absolutely gorgeous stand for any number of uses in the home, though originally it would probably have been used as a plant or sculpture stand. For anyone with a Classical decor or passionate about antique furniture...
