Denis Castaing’s work reflects an obsession with line, fold, volume, the surface cut in solid and void, and the notion of fracture. His constant references to architecture — whether in buildings, clothing, industrial objects, the body of a dancer in motion, or the layout of a landscape or a musical motif — feed his repertoire of forms, which draws from a memory of places, signs, fragments, and impressions. Through his sculptures, he explores movement within stillness, seeking to inscribe clay in a tectonic and rhythmic unfolding. His approach examines the relationship between the work and the interior space it contains — the place where emptiness can act — as well as the space in which it is situated and evolves under the viewer’s wandering gaze. In each new investigation, he seeks to establish a dialogue between form and light, form and color, infusing lines and volumes with an atmospheric flow or an imperceptible passage, to generate a sense of vibration.
