About the Item

Scandinavian Coffee Table in Solid Pine, 1970s Striking Scandinavian coffee table from the 1970s, crafted entirely from solid pine. With its substantial proportions, bold geometric construction and beautifully aged surface, the table is a particularly characterful example of the robust pine furniture that became an important part of Scandinavian design during this period. The substantial rectangular tabletop is constructed from thick pine boards and supported by a sculptural solid-wood base. The straightforward construction gives the table a strong architectural quality, while the generous dimensions of the timber emphasize the tactile and natural character of the material. Rather than relying on decorative details, the design derives its expression from proportion, construction and the pine itself. Knots, variations in grain and changes in tone become part of the composition, giving the otherwise minimal form warmth and individuality. The wood has developed a rich patina over the decades, with warm honey and amber tones that beautifully accentuate the grain. Traces of age and use contribute to the character of the piece and complement the deliberately honest nature of its construction. During the late 1960s and 1970s, Scandinavian furniture increasingly embraced solid native woods, heavier proportions and visible construction. This table captures that aesthetic particularly well, combining an almost rustic simplicity with a distinctly modern and sculptural presence. With its generous surface and low profile, the table makes an impressive centrepiece in a living room. Its strong form works particularly well in a contemporary interior, where the warmth and texture of the aged pine provide a beautiful contrast to more refined materials and furnishings. A wonderfully characterful example of Scandinavian 1970s design, combining functionality, robust craftsmanship and the expressive beauty of solid pine. Good original vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with its age. The pine has developed a beautiful natural patina over time.
