Antique Bohemian Enamelled Glass Vase Hookah Base 19th C Vintage Decorative Art

Located in London, GB

Antique Bohemian Enamelled Glass Hookah Base, c. 1880–1910 Elegant late 19th-century Bohemian hookah (nargile) base in clear optic-ribbed glass, richly decorated with hand-painted polychrome enamel floral sprays and scrolling gilt ornament. The bulbous body rises to a tall flared neck, while the underside features a finely cut starburst design, demonstrating the quality of its manufacture. Produced for the flourishing export trade to Ottoman and Middle Eastern markets, this example combines the vibrant enamel decoration and refined glass working for which Bohemian workshops were renowned during the period. The delicate floral motifs remain bright and attractive, complemented by original gilding around the top foot and decorative borders. A striking decorative object in its own right, the piece also represents an increasingly sought-after category of 19th-century Islamic-market export glass. Details Origin: Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic) Date: Circa 1880–1910 Material: Hand-enamelled and gilt cut glass Height: 40 cm (15¾ in.) Decoration: Polychrome enamel floral ornament with gilt highlights Base: Cut starburst foot Condition Good antique condition, with age-related wear consistent with use and age. Minor rubbing to gilding and enamel as expected. No obvious repairs noted. A handsome and substantial antique hookah...

The adventure began in 1912 with two Decorative Arts enthusiasts: Pierre Laguionie (1884-1978), director of “Printemps” Department Store and lawyer René Guilleré (1878-1931), founder of the Salon des Artistes Dé-corateurs. Their objective is to promote the craft of Art in the daily life of the French people on the motto of the beautiful and the useful. Decorative objects and furniture (furniture, ceramics, glassware, carpets, up-holstery, wallpapers, etc.) must be beautiful, modern, of high quality and at affordable prices. The studio acquired young decorative artists such as Marcel Guillemard (1886-1932) and Louis Sognot (1892-1969) for furniture, and for works of art and ceramics by Madeleine Sougez (1891-1945)active from 1920 to 1928, Claude Lévy (1895-1942) from 1919 to 1929, Paule Petitjean (1895-1989) de 1913 à 1929, Hélèné Gatelet de 1924 à 1930, Marcelle Thiénot...

19th Century Minton’s Art Pottery Studio Kensington Gore Hand-Painted Charger

By Minton

Located in Cincinnati, OH

This large hand-painted charger was made by Mintons Art Pottery Studio of Kensington Gore, London. The studio traces its origins to the renowned earthenware and fine bone china factory Minton, located in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire England. Colin Minton Campbell, descendant of founder Thomas Minton, took over company management in 1858 and went on to establish Mintons Art Pottery Studio in 1871 for the purpose of hand decorating pottery and tiles. The studio initially operated under the direction of painter and book illustrator William Stephen Coleman and drew upon the talents of artists studying at the Kensington's National Art Training School, now known as the Royal College of Art, as well as those of well-regarded Continental artists. The company was short lived as it was destroyed by an accidental fire in 1875 and was not rebuilt. This large earthenware charger has been hand-painted in polychrome enamel and depicts two young children at play in the nursery. The scene includes multiple colors and textures and features a cherubic toddler seated upon a bed alongside a young girl standing on a blue footstool...
