Loetz For Boudon And Klur Gilt Metal Monted Glass Vase. A highly sought after vase culminating the zenith of Loetz and the Art Nouveau design. Czech Republic Circa 1900 Rubin Ruby Papillon Decor Metal mount with indistinct impressed marks for Boudon and Klur Height: 10.5 Inches x 8 Inches wide x 5 Inches deep Condition: Very good with wear commensurate of age and use with some loss to gilt, The Loetz glassworks existed in Klostermuhle, Austria, for just over a hundred years, starting from 1840. But its heyday was during the life-time of Max Ritter Von Spaun, grandson of the original Johann Loetz who had founded the company. Von Spaun took over the company in 1879 and ran it until 1908, a year before his death. He was assisted by Eduard Prochaska, his technical specialist, and together they invented, designed and produced a whole series of wonderful new types of glass, taking out several patents and winning awards at all the major world exhibitions during the 1890's and the first years of the new century. The Loetz company were amongst the leaders in Art Nouveau design and expecially in irridescent art glass. "Papillon" glass, like the vase on the left, is sometimes known today as "oil spot" glass. Another favourite Loetz colouring was irridized glass with pulled trails called "Phenomenon" glass. There were irridized vases with ribbons of metallic colours winding over the surface, and many spectacular designs with applied trails of beautiful colours, or simply pulled out of the body of the glass to form handles or decoration. About 1900 the company started collaborating with outside designers, and some great artists designed pieces for Lotz, notably Joseph Hofmann, Koloman Moser, Maria Kirchner, and Hofstatter. In 1908 Loetz was taken over by Max Von Spaun's son, also called Max, and although it struggled financially (going through bankruptcy in 1911 and again in 1931) there were several great designers whose work was produced by Loetz during those years and through the art deco period. Model #2 Eduard Stellmacher and Co, Porzellanfabrik und Kunstkeramische Industriewerke Driven to establish a new company that produced luxury porcelain and ceramic items based on his own aesthetic aspirations, Stellmacher left Amphora when the workshop was at its most prosperous, in 1904. Together with entrepreneur Karl Frank, who provided the financial backing, he founded Ed. Stellmacher & Co. in Turn-Teplitz in 1905. From the outset, Stellmacher worked hard to achieve a major position among other high-end ceramic art producers. He believed the success of the company would depend on his products of “appropriate methods and unerring quality, perfect from both the technical and artistic sides”. Stellmacher based his first collection on artistically progressive products, pieces he believed would be in high demand. The greater part of the designs were either large vases complemented with sculptures of fantastic dragons or natural animals. With this series, Stellmacher continued the themes he had created for Amphora from 1899-1902, however, his naturalistic renderings of animals was even more elaborately precise. He developed a special ceramic material called refined earthenware, which minimized the shrinkage that was common during firing and allowed for greater preservation of details in the original models. Unfortunately, by 1905, contrary to Stellmacher’s plans, there was little to no demand for objects of this type. Very few pieces exist today as very few were originally produced. Even after redirecting the company to produce commercial goods Stellmacher still could not ward off the company’s demise. By 1910 the Stellmacher & Co. fell into bankruptcy and was liquidated. This large ginger jar is ornately decorated with a highly detailed romantic figurative landscape scene, in which three men depicted in gold enjoy an opulent picnic of wine, meat, and fruit under a tree, in front of a large medieval castle complete with a canon and canon balls. A gold leaf motif decorates the backside of the piece. The signature "Fuchs-Nadler" can be found within the picnic scene, underneath the tray of food and wine. This is an Empire style gilt bronze mounted wood, glass and marble top heavy and large vitrine/curio cabinet. The wide tapered rectangular vitrine has four glass walls framed with wood. The front door is one of them and it is beveled. It is decorated with a gilt mounted bronze garland of roses, mixed of flowers and foliage at the top and bottom area. At the top center, there is a gilt bronze shell and at the bottom a Wedgwood light blue porcelain round plaque with a cherub that is carving a piece of stone. Above the plaque, a large gilt bronze bow is decorating the curio cabinet. There are scrolls of acanthus leaves adorning each side of the upper top corners of the door. A gilt bronze swag made of laurel leaves branches with a bow in the center embellish the frieze of each one of the sides, and its corners are also decorated with scrolls of acanthus leaves with a garland of buds hanging from them. There are also some gilt beads chain ornaments decorating the wood part of the sides. The cornice is adorned with a bronze border made of carved acanthus leaves. The upper part of the curio cabinet is covered by a heavy light pink with grey veins marble top. To support the vitrine there are four gilt heavy bronze lion paws decorated with large acanthus leaves and a pair of laurel branches at the upper part of them. These acanthus leaves are spreading toward the lower front border and forming an arc. A portable reliquary may be called a fereter, and a chapel in which it is housed a feretory. A monstrance, also known as an ostensorium (or an ostensory), is a vessel used in Roman Catholic, Old Catholic, High Church Lutheran and Anglican churches for the display on an altar of some object of piety, such as the consecrated Eucharistic host during Eucharistic adoration or Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. It is also used as reliquary for the public display of relics of some saints. The use of reliquaries became an important part of Christian practices from at least the 4th century, initially in the Eastern Churches, which adopted the practice of moving and dividing the bodies of saints much earlier than the West, probably in part because the new capital of Constantinople, unlike Rome, lacked buried saints. Relics are venerated in the Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic and some Anglican Churches. Reliquaries provide a means of protecting and displaying relics. While frequently taking the form of caskets, they range in size from simple pendants or rings to very elaborate ossuaries. The relics were enshrined in containers crafted of or covered with gold, silver, gems, and enamel. These objects constituted a important form of artistic production across Europe and Byzantium throughout the Middle Ages. Many were designed with portability in mind, often being exhibited in public or carried in procession on the saint's feast day or on other holy days. Pilgrimages often centered on the veneration of relics. The faithful often venerate relics by bowing before the reliquary or kissing it; those churches which observe the veneration of relics distinguish between the honor given to the saints and the worship that is due to God alone. Sixteenth-century reformers such as Martin Luther opposed the use of relics since many had no proof of historical authenticity and objected to a cult of saints. Many reliquaries, particularly in northern Europe, were destroyed by Calvinists or Calvinist sympathizers during the Reformation...
