A very fine pair of French 19th century neoclassical Greco-Roman style patinanted bronze and ormolu mounted figural candelabra by Henri Picard (French, Active from 1831-1864). The large and impressive pair of ten-light candelabra, each with a patinated figure of a standing bearded semi-nude male holding an ornate ormolu ten-light candelabrum, their bare feet resting on allegorical wreaths, helmet and sword stash, all above square black-slate plinth surmounted with ormolu trims and scrolled legs, the front surmounted with patinated bronze plaques depicting Greco-Roman scenes of Senators and maidens. Stamped "H. Picard" on the inner ring, the back of the male figures each stamped with the numerals "3776". Circa: Paris, 1850-1860. The well regarded fondeur and doreur Henri Picard was recorded at 6 rue Jarente in 1831, and moved to 10 rue de la Perle in 1839. The firm, which was active from 1831-1864, is known for having supplied very fine decorative objects to Emperor Napoleon III's apartments at the Louvre, which are still part of the collection, and was reputed for its fine quality decorative production of gilt and patinated bronzes, pièce de table and garnitures de cheminée...

Incredible investment quality antique French gilded bronze Empire eight day clock, "Allegory of Poetry" Claude François Rabiat circa 1810, in excellent condition. The clock depicts a handsome tall winged angel holding a stylus and leaning on a column with two volumes on philosophy. The column with four portrait plaques including "Caesar" and the writer/philosopher "Xenophon", there are two further portrait plaques to the side of the column, the clock is raised on a malachite marble plinth with gilt bronze bun feet. The clock having an eight day time and strike mechanism, striking the hours on a mellow sounding bell, the white potrcelain dial with black Roman numerals and signed "a' Paris". The clock works perfectly and has recently been professionally overhauled and cleaned by a clocksmith, the clock keeps very good time, the original key and pendulum is present. This large and attractive architectural piece is known as a pulpit canopy. Before the advent of microphones and speakers, orators would often address assemblies from elevated platforms known as “wine glass pulpits”. These podiums featured domed roofs called abat-voix, sometimes known as sounding boards, that would project sound outwards. Our walnut wood pulpit canopy is a fine example of such a device. Hand-carved and hand-painted in Italy in the 1700’s, our abat-voix is roughly octagonal in shape. Each of the sides have edges with luxuriously thick step molding, alternating between stained and gilded wood. Each of the corner cornices are adorned with gilded flower carvings, although some are missing. The interior of the canopy features a gilded open sun with sinuous rays emanating all around. Each of the sides are adorned with foliate margents surrounded by scrolls, again with some losses. All the edges are bordered with a thin layer of gilding.
