About the Item

Original special poster for the Art Directors Club for Anatomy of a Murder (1959) This film was directed by Otto Preminger, and stars James Stewart. It was one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to address sex and rape in graphic terms. It includes one of Saul Bass's most celebrated title sequences, an innovative musical score by Duke Ellington (who plays a character called Pie-Eye in the film), and is one of the finest pure trial films ever made. This incredibly rare poster was specially printed for a single event held by the Art Directors Club, Charlotte Chapter, for a retrospective of the designer Saul Bass's work in the cinema. This organisation was founded in 1920 to award the world's best and most creative artistic designers. Saul Bass was honoured by the organisation for his outstanding work in poster design, credit designs and work in television. The image on this poster is one of Bass's most iconic images: the body of a murdered man from Otto Preminger's classic courtroom drama. To-date this is only the second example of this poster to have surfaced. This poster is conservation linen backed it would be shipped rolled in a strong tube by Federal Express.

"The Man with the Golden Arm" Original US Film Poster
By Saul Bass
Located in London, GB
Original US film poster. Saul Bass was born in New York. Bass was a rotund, jovial character. After studying at the Art Students League and graduating from Brooklyn College, he moved west at the age of 26, and is credited with introducing an East Coast sensibility to marketing. He saw advertising as a means for funding his passion for the movies, and after 6 years working with a number of agencies, he finally had the funds to establish his own. All this time, he was forging ever-closer links with the film industry, and in 1954 this led to a commission from Otto Preminger to design the poster for Carmen Jones. The following year the director invited the artist to work on The Man With The Golden Arm...
