About the Item

“Girl from the Karen people” - this painting was inspired by a trip to Thailand. Far from big cities, in the mountains of Northern Thailand, among dense forests, the Karen people live. Women of this people, in particular the Padaung tribe, wear collars made of brass spirals around their necks from the age of 5. Over the years, the neck lengthens and resembles a jug neck. The weight of such a collar is about 5 kg. After marriage, the number of spiral turns is no longer increased. It is said that the collar is periodically removed, and sometimes damage to the vertebrae occurs due to relaxed muscles. Nowadays, such outfits attract crowds of tourists, so women are in no hurry to give up wearing collars. There are different versions about the origin of this tradition. One of them says that brass collars were protection from tiger attacks. The girl in this picture is a bright representative of the Padaung tribe, who has continued the traditions of her entire female family since childhood. Bracelets on the arms, a spiral collar, a colorful wreath and a sleeveless national shirt are typical items of clothing of this tribe. The girl, like other women, does needlework. She is still small, but she already helps her mother weave scarves for sale. The girl has a very expressive look that is impossible to forget. The oil painting on canvas is created in a modern impressionist style. It is ready to hang on the wall and comes with hooks. Miao Girl depicts a young Miao girl in her native costume. This was painted from a trip to China. The Miao are a group of linguistically-related peoples living in Southern China and Southeast Asia, which are recognized by the government of China as one of the 56 official ethnic groups. The Miao live primarily in southern China's mountains, in the provinces of Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Guangdong, and Hainan. Some sub-groups of the Miao, most notably the Hmong people, have migrated out of China into Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand) Miao women demonstrate great skill and artistry when making traditional clothing and handicrafts. They excel at embroidering, weaving, paper-cutting, batik, and intricate jewelry casting. From vests, coats, hats, collars and cuffs, to full skirts, and baby carriers, the patterns on their clothes are extremely complicated and colorful with clean lines. Girls of around seven will learn embroidering from mothers and sisters, and by the time they are teenagers, they are quite deft. Additionally, Miao silver jewelry...
