About the Item

"Boy from the Skeleton Tribe," 60x80 cm, Acrylic and oil on canvas This painting from the "Children of the World" series transports the viewer to the mystical world of the highland forests of Papua New Guinea, home to the Chimbu (Skeleton) people—one of the most enigmatic tribes, known to the world only since 1934. The portrait depicts a boy at the moment of initiation. His body is covered with ritual painting imitating bones—a characteristic image of the "skeleton" warriors, to whom the tribe owes its name. According to Chimbu legend, people began painting their bodies this way to deceive an evil forest spirit that devoured the tribe's inhabitants in ancient times: by assuming the form of spirits, the warriors became invisible to it. Over time, this image evolved into a powerful symbol of strength and protection, as well as a terrifying sign for neighboring tribes. In the child's hands, a hunter's spear is a weapon and a symbol of maturity and responsibility. The artist emphasizes the contrast between the boy's lively, wary gaze and the deathly mask of "bones," creating a tense image of a small person standing between two worlds—the human and the spiritual. The dense greenery of the Guinean tropics contrasts with the light lines of the painting on the child's body. The boy's figure seems to emerge from the mist, just as the Chimbu warriors emerge from the morning haze during ritual dances. The painting is imbued with a sense of initiation. The boy, who listens to tales around the evening fire, learns to weave traps, and hears the rustling of the forest, becomes part of an ancient tradition and one of the guardians of the mountain spirits on this night, to the rhythm of drums and the howl of flutes. In this work, Anna Shesterikova explores the theme of primal fear and the power of collective memory. "Skeleton Boy" is a metaphor for transition: a person becomes stronger when they embrace their heritage and find their place in the world. The painting is ready to hang on the wall and comes complete with hooks and cord. Chuvash Amazon. Portrait of a girl, square, impressionism, children of the world

Located in Oslo, NO

From the "Children of the World" series. In this expressive work, the artist explores the theme of cultural memory and feminine strength, embodied in the image of the young heroine. Sunlight softly reflects off the metal coins on the girl's chest ornament, transforming them into shimmering reflections. The painting's theme is connected to the traditional Chuvash spring festival of Akatuy. Today is a special day for the young Chuvash girl Asya: she will be participating for the first time in an ancient festive rite—a girls' round dance. She is dressed in a festive chalkha costume made of white fabric, adorned with scarlet and dark blue embroidery. The geometric patterns harken back to ancient symbols of fertility, the sun, water, and feminine power. On her chest is a bib covered with coins and metal plates that ring like small bells when moved. The tall, conical headdress, called a tukhya, reminiscent of an ancient helmet...
