About the Item

In this 80x80 cm oil on canvas painting, Anna Shesterikova depicts a girl from the American Amish sect, a community that lives its own unique way of life: without electricity, using gas refrigerators and horse-drawn wagons instead of cars. The entire community is bound by a set of rules, the "Ordnung," which is taught to obey from a very early age, "while the child is still sitting in a high chair." Mary wears a black bonnet and plain dresses, fastened with pins instead of buttons. No one is expected to stand out with the beauty of their clothes, and buttons are merely decorative. In her rare free moments, Mary loves to play with dolls. But all her dolls have no faces, and their home lacks a large mirror. The Amish believe this is how children learn to understand that appearance is not what matters. What matters is being part of the community. Expressions of individuality here are risky and sinful. That's why the girl is forbidden to look at photographs of people or have her own photograph taken. Mary learned hierarchy early: the man is the boss in the family, and the woman submits—first to her father and brothers, and then to her husband. The artist depicted clotheslines with dark, hand-washed laundry that resemble a cross—a cross this girl will carry throughout her life. Mary is still a child, but a child with a carefully broken character. With a doll without a face. With pins instead of buttons. With a learned silence instead of a bold voice and music. This portrait is not about Amish exoticism. It's about how easy it is to break a person without ever raising a hand. The painting is ready to hang on the wall and is equipped with hooks and cord. The sides are painted dark. The gallery presents the Swiss artist Anna Shesterikova, a highly professional artist who has been working in the international art market for many years. Chuvash Amazon. Portrait of a girl, square, impressionism, children of the world

By Anna Shesterikova

From the "Children of the World" series. In this expressive work, the artist explores the theme of cultural memory and feminine strength, embodied in the image of the young heroine. Sunlight softly reflects off the metal coins on the girl's chest ornament, transforming them into shimmering reflections. The painting's theme is connected to the traditional Chuvash spring festival of Akatuy. Today is a special day for the young Chuvash girl Asya: she will be participating for the first time in an ancient festive rite—a girls' round dance. She is dressed in a festive chalkha costume made of white fabric, adorned with scarlet and dark blue embroidery. The geometric patterns harken back to ancient symbols of fertility, the sun, water, and feminine power. On her chest is a bib covered with coins and metal plates that ring like small bells when moved. The tall, conical headdress, called a tukhya, reminiscent of an ancient helmet...
