About the Item

An exceptional Italian salesman's sample chest, dating to circa 1800–1820, showcasing the refined craftsmanship and ingenious cabinetry of the early 19th century. Beautifully constructed with intricate wood inlay throughout, this elegant cabinet combines sophisticated design with remarkable functionality. The upper façade is cleverly designed to appear as three individual drawers, yet it actually opens as one full-width drawer fitted with four decorative knobs and accented by finely crafted ivory escutcheons. Beneath, a pair of paneled doors opens to reveal a thoughtfully arranged interior featuring two sliding compartments that extend from either side, providing hidden storage for correspondence, valuables, or personal effects. The lower cabinet retains its original working key, while the upper drawer opens without one. The rich inlaid veneers display beautiful figuring that has mellowed over more than two centuries, developing the warm patina that only age can impart. Both decorative and practical, this tabletop chest would have graced the desk or library of a distinguished home and remains an outstanding example of Italian cabinetmaking from the Neoclassical period. Presented in wonderful condition for its age, this rare chest offers exceptional craftsmanship, ingenious hidden storage and timeless elegance, making it equally suited for collectors and sophisticated interiors.
