PENDANT WITH VIRGIN OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Spain (Andalucia or Estremadura), c. 1630 Gold, enamel, paste Weight 35 grams; dimensions 74 × 57 × 3 mm Openwork gold pendant with quatrefoil frame in black and white enamel with Spanish inscription CONCEBIDA S[I]N PECADO ORIGINAL (conceived without original sin) surrounded by an aureole. Four glass-paste gems in box settings partially cover the inscription. The central motif is the Virgin in flat relief standing on a pillar with winged cherub and surrounded by a gold aureole. She wears a white enameled dress with blue flowers and gold flowers on the translucent blue mantle. The reverse is enameled with a smaller figure of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. Badges such as this one declared the faith of the wearer in the devotion to the Immaculate Conception. Byzantine painted cameo is encased in a gold overlay with incredible double-sided pictures. Upon microscope observation, this appears to be a hand painting with beautiful detailing. Pin's opposite side is family loved one's photograph protected under a plastic covering. Both are encased in a plastic cover which is removed through the bezel of the pin.
