Period: 1865 Provenance: United Kingdom Dimensions: 7,5 x 3,8 cm Weight: 15,93 gr This yellow gold Holbeinesque pendant is characterized by a central Siberian amethyst of approximately 10 carats, surrounded by rose cut diamonds and polychrome cloisonné enamels, embellished with further rose cut diamonds, while the external profiling of the pendant is characterized by minute natural pearls; the lower part, however, is completed by a square-shaped pendant in which the diamonds and cloisonné enamels return. The back of the pendant, however, still deserves attention as it is finely engraved with an arabesque motif which gives further preciousness to the object. The Holbein style, of which this pendant is an example, is inspired by the original jewellery designs of the German painter Hans Holbein the Younger (1497 – 1543), court painter to King Henry VII...

Holbeinesque enameled pendant with natural pearls and fire-opal. This is a fabulous Victorian Holbeinesque pendant attributed to Russell and created in England back in 1860. The rare and important pendant has been crafted in solid yellow gold of 19 karats and is embellished on both sides, with applications of green, blue and red glass enamel floral motifs. The piece is centered by a gorgeous precious fire opal, which is surrounded by squared stations mounted with six natural white pearls and suspended with one pear shaped dangling white pearl. A Victorian Holbeinesque emerald, diamond and pearl pendant, to the centre a square-cut emerald estimated to weigh 1.75 carats, cross-set with four pearls with trefoil enamelled decorations in between, surrounded by a polychrome enamel frame encrusted with eight old-cut diamonds estimated to weigh a total of 2 carats, terminating to a drop of similar design centrally-set with an emerald estimated to weight 0.75, all mounted in yellow gold, the back with fine scroll and foliate engraved decorations, circa 1870, measuring approximately 7.3 x 3cm, gross weight 16.5 grams. Holbeinesque is a term used to describe Victorian jewellery that was made in the style of the Renaissance, particularly inspired by the Northern Renaissance and the paintings of Hans Holbein. Holbein himself produced sketches of the jewellery worn at the Tudor court, and the sketches were used as reference points by Victorian jewellery designers and craftsmen. This pendant is a spectacular example of this style, featuring colourful green and red enamel, verdant emeralds, lustrous pearls, and dazzling diamonds.
