Patrick Beaulieu’s most recent project Révélations uses installation and digital prints to explore how artistic manipulation can create shifts in one’s expectations of the visual experience. Beaulieu clearly acknowledges his artistic presence in the work through mechanical and digital manipulation of the objects and images he presents. He becomes more than a passive observer and recorder of his physical world; the alteration of conventional photographs implants his voice and vision into the work. This approach directly addresses and contrasts artistic practices which seek to conceal the artist’s hand. His method diverges from those that attempt to present an uninterrupted and uncontaminated record, such as some documentary and straight photography. In using these stylized techniques, Beaulieu makes a palpable proclamation regarding the subjective and flexible condition of images. In Révélations, images of trees, moss, leaves and other natural objects are presented in strict colour schemes of muted grays, browns and greens. Henri Venne was born in Joliette in 1966 but now lives and works in Montreal. Since 1994, he has been showing his artwork, a combination of semi-abstract photography and painting, in solo and group shows throughout many galleries and museums in Quebec. Some of his most important shows include his solo exhibitions (D’)après nature (after nature) in 2004 at the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Arts and still life in 2006 at Art Mûr gallery, which represents him in Montreal. He holds a masters degree from Concordia University in Fine Arts (1999) and now teaches art classes at Vanier and André Grasset Colleges, University of Montreal’s Department of Cultural Activities and also at Art Neuf Cultural Center. His work is now part of many collections, namely the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Arts, the Canada Council Art Bank, la Collection Prêt d’oeuvres d’art du Musée National des Beaux Arts du Québec, of Loto-Québec and Fasken Martineau-Dumoulin (Montreal) and also in private collections. Beyond Sociology: The Act of Seeing a Person Text by Edwin Janzen It is hardly surprising that in our society perceptions of homeless persons remain two-dimensional, stereotypical, inadequate. Even for the rare administration tackling the problems of homelessness in an effective, meaningful way, the homeless person’s humanity is buried beneath a mountain of endless statistical markers: mental illness, substance abuse, soup-kitchen attendance, etc. The enormous negativity lingering about the resultant profile permits scant room for other, arguably important accoutrements of the human experience—character, emotion, intellect, beauty, relationship to divinity—and leaves homeless persons basically where they already are: on the street, the objects of middle-class loathing or pity. Struck by this depressing determinism, artist Bevan Ramsay set out to cast portrait busts of homeless persons (one woman, the others men), producing an edition in fine, white statuary Hydrocal plaster mounted on mahogany bases.
