Whitesides made an impact in the art community at a very young age. While working as an illustrator in New York City from the late 60s through the mid 80s, his paintings appeared in many publications, including Time Magazine, Rolling Stone and Playboy. He received numerous awards from The Art Directors Club of New York and The Society of Illustrators. It was at this time that Whitesides began a period of bold work with the airbrush that emphasized the simplified spaces and clean lines of art deco and art moderne, for which he gained a national reputation.
A native Utahn, Whitesides believes art is a language and an opportunity for his vision to inspire others. He continues to grow as an artist, as his art is constantly opening doors on new vistas...

"For me, paint documents the state of things, how I feel and what is at the forefront in my thinking—maybe it’s like the soup of the day. I do not consider this process to be anything special in itself. The paintings record the daily random and absurd associations I make, which seem interesting to me after the fact. The Domestic paintings are a case in point. My wife and I have six children. Four have left home. Three are married. We are left with two children, both currently in middle school. We have about five years and they too will move out. This is on my mind. I am thinking about the layers of memories and it comes out as layers of paint. The paintings themselves suggest watery scenes pierced by light; there is a vibratory contrast between elements that shimmer with recognition yet remain elusive. And it is there where viewers may find themselves with a heightened feeling of awareness.
To achieve this effect, she starts by building layers of paint over loose charcoal sketches. As the composition emerges, she refines it to a certain point, then obscures it with a veil of white until the initial colors disappear. From there, she excavates through the layers to reveal the final balance of color and form.
