Binker Barn

Family Home by Kay Kollar Design in The Sea Ranch, CA

A modernist cabin built in 1967 by William Turnbull, located along California’s wild, rugged, northern coastline and part of Lawernce Halprin’s now famed Sea Ranch development, was the retreat of my clients’ for many years. An architectural renovation a few years ago called for a reimagining of the interiors. I employed clear, energizing, jewel-like colors via fireplace tiles, lacquer doors and sophisticated furniture silhouettes—as a counterpoint to the often fog shrouded, muted colors of the surrounding land and seascape. Furniture by Hans Wegner, Ico Parisi, Poul Henningsen, Paul McCobb as well as found collections of local shells and driftwood gave the freshly sandblasted wood shell an new vitality and soul.
