Brooklyn Heights Townhouse

This Brooklyn Heights townhouse is a landmark dating back to the early 1800s and once owned by the designer of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Given its horticultural history, we incorporated fun old-world botanical patterning and exuberant colors. I’d say it’s traditional but with a playful twist. We tried to be bold in patterning and color. We brought a mix of British-influenced silhouettes alongside more contemporary and independent designers, materials, and motifs to make the home feel fresh. Ultimately, the home feels warm and inviting but appropriate for a young family.

Our goal was to unite the home's historical details and finishes with a calm and collected mix of contemporary independent designers, custom solutions, and vintage pieces. We updated the garden-level kitchen, making it a comfortable and casual environment with a fun mix of candy apple red, sky blue, and white oak. The cheerful kitchen offsets the darker space and seamlessly coordinates with the adjacent playroom. In addition, we replaced and added lighting and new plumbing fittings and added closed storage cabinetry and additional shelving, and repainted cabinetry.

The parlor floor is a more modern and adult space for entertaining, with an area to play records and sit and read a book, an upright piano, and a fun mohair curvilinear sofa.

The top floor contains the guest bedroom, two charming children's bedrooms, and an open "work area" for the children to read books and play with Legos - with toy storage, imaginative places to play and create, seating for story-time, and room for sleepovers too.
