Nestled into a sunny, forested slope at the base of Mt. Tamalpais in Mill Valley California, the site features panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay and surrounding canyons. The clients fell in love with the home’s Tudor architecture and wanted to find a way to make the updates required (both in terms of layout and aesthetics) while staying true to the home’s character. In answer to their request for a contemporary but timeless design, Studio Montemayor approached this project as a restoration instead of a simple renovation. Bringing in Traditional elements such as the English-style oak paneling in the living room, (which also informed the design of the kitchen cabinetry), and contrasting them with sculptural furnishings such as a modular Italian sofa, Pierre Paulin lounge chairs, and a contemporary black marble fireplace. The aim was to create a dialog between the architecture and furnishings, and through juxtaposition ignite those conversations.
