West Coast Wellness

Family Home by Sarah Barnard Design in Los Angeles, CA

West Coast Wellness is a poetic collaboration between interior design, the natural world, and local artisans. The result is a high impact, low footprint home that lives in harmony with the natural world, nestled in the hills of Pacific Palisades.

Designed for rest and rejuvenation, the sensory wellness room takes advantage of sweeping ocean views and ample natural lighting. This home is entirely customized to optimize the wellbeing of its occupants, including the use of no VOC finishes throughout.

The tranquil primary bathroom offers an immersive, tactile experience that encourages mindfulness and relaxation. The wall tile is made from a material historically used in Japanese roofing.

This quiet office space has built-in bookshelves using FSC-certified reclaimed elm wood. A roman shade made with a linen hummingbird fabric references the hummingbirds nesting nearby and celebrates the homeowner’s love of birding.

The living room features a custom concrete fireplace inlaid with copper, inspired by Japanese kintsugi pottery. A glowing overhead light hand-made from washi paper resembles whales and seashells, a quiet reference to the ocean nearby.

The dining room wall sets the stage for a fireplace, raised to be at eye level with the table for a calming visual display during meals. The overhead light, featuring handmade porcelain ginkgo leaves, serves as the centerpiece of the room.

The organic kitchen is designed with natural materials to inspire peace and encourage a connection to the environment when considering the food being prepared. The marble island leads into the family room, where glowing floral lighting calls to the gardens outside.

A custom, laser-cut railing was designed with a Queen Anne’s lace pattern, a plant beloved by butterflies and bees.

The honey-toned, custom bathroom is an homage to bees and butterflies in this walk-in work of art for finding peace and beauty.
