The New Antiquarians: At Home with Young Collectors

By Phaidon

Located in New York, NY

An inspiring collection of idiosyncratic interiors assembled around eclectic collections of objects with life and history The once-rarefied world of antiques is bursting open thanks to a new generation of collectors. The New Antiquarians features twenty-two young connoisseurs whose spirited interiors exemplify unorthodox approaches to living with history. Hailing from across the United States and Britain, they brazenly blend the old with the new, embrace anachronism and pastiche, employ serious knowledge with humor and wit, and consider vintage and historical objects through the lens of contemporary values. The New Antiquarians is an exuberant entry point into the world of antiques, highlighting one-of-a-kind collections and single-minded collectors whose stories suggest compelling new ways of living with the past. Collectors whose homes are featured include Jared Austin; Emily Adams Bode Aujla and Aaron Singh Aujla; Pablo Bronstein; Collier Calandruccio; Adam Charlap Hyman; Emily Eerdmans; Jared Frank; Andrew LaMar Hopkins...

Rattan: A World of Elegance and Charm
Rattan: A World of Elegance and Charm

Rattan: A World of Elegance and Charm

By Rizzoli International Publications

Located in New York, NY

Rattan furnishings evoke the glamour and laid back elegance of exotic beach houses as well as the informal beauty of plant filled garden rooms and sun dappled verandas. Long fascinated with rattan's versatility, designer Lulu Lytle examines the enduring appeal of this sustainable tropical palm in RATTAN: A WORLD OF ELEGANCE AND CHARM. The first book in decades to examine the history and craftsmanship of rattan furniture, this insightful tome showcases rattan's appeal through archival images of beautiful interiors including Madeleine Castaing's winter garden in Paris, Michael Taylor's own Californian beach house, the Titanic's Café Parisian and the Billy Baldwin designed Mr. Kennedy's beauty salon in New York City. Rattan's many personalities are explored through its inclusion in settings as diverse as Impressionist paintings, flamboyant nightclubs and pared down contemporary drawing rooms. A reflection of its inherent beauty and longevity, antique rattan furniture from the nineteenth century is highly collectible, as are rattan pieces created by giants of modern design such as Josef Hoffmann for Thonet, Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn, Jean-Michel Frank for Ecart, Renzo Mongiardino for Bonacina, Arne Jacobsen for Sika, Paul Frankl and Donald Deskey. Rattan pieces have become iconic and highly prized, including Hiroomi Tahara's Wrap Sofa, Franca Helg's Primavera Chair, and the many iterations of the beloved Peacock Chair. RATTAN also highlights some of the many tastemakers who have embraced rattan--from Marella Agnelli, Babe Paley, and Cecil Beaton to leading interior designers including Jeffrey Bilhuber, Veere Grenney, Axel Vervoordt, and Jacques Grange. About The Author Lulu Lytle, long smitten with the romance and versatility of rattan, rescued the last remaining workshop in Britain in 2010 in order to establish Soane Britain...

More Beautiful All-American Decoration

More Beautiful All-American Decoration

By Mark Sikes, Rizzoli International Publications

Located in New York, NY

The author of Beautiful is back with a new book of his interiors, filled with blue-and-white vignettes, wicker, saturated color, and pretty patterns. Interior designer Mark D. Sikes burst onto the publishing scene with his New York Times best-selling first book, Beautiful. His new book, aptly titled More Beautiful, picks up where the first left off, in a celebration of classic, all-American decorating. The rooms featured in More Beautiful are divided into five distinct styles, all of which exude the happiness that comes with surrounding oneself with things you love. ""Traditional"" is chockablock with vibrant color, antique furniture, and heady doses of trim and pattern. ""Country"" is a new take on the style, where distressed finishes and modern silhouettes mingle for a warm welcome. ""Coastal"" is streamlined, with natural woven fibers, sun-faded linen and neutrals, and blues and whites galore. ""Mediterranean"" evokes faraway lands, with a saturated palette, ornate tiles and ikats, and iron details. Finally, there's ""Beautiful"": a peek inside Mark's own Hollywood Hills home, which nods to all of his favorite design signatures--including Italian wicker, blue and white, Anglo-Indian antiques, and more. With all-new photography by Amy Neunsinger, the book will inspire with rooms that are light-filled and crisply patterned, chic yet comfortable, and just the way people want to live today. About The Author Mark D. Sikes is an esteemed interior designer working on projects throughout the United States. His work has been featured in AD, Veranda, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, the Wall Street Journal, C Magazine, Milieu, and Domino. His rooms for the Kips Bay Show House in New York, Greystone in Beverly Hills, the Southern Living Show House in Birmingham, and the Coastal Living Show House in Newport have been much celebrated. Mark has partnered with the best manufacturers in furniture and fabric to develop his signature product lines, including Chaddock, Soane, Hudson Valley Lighting...

The waisted case surmounted by a brass pineapple finial over a drum housing the movement. The dial is behind a hinged convex glazed cast brass bezel to front and brass carrying handles to sides, over hipped concave-sided section forming the base. The front has an applied mount of a sunburst mask, the rear with keyhole shaped door incorporating fine scroll-pierced sound fret set within the frame of the case, on generous cavetto moulded skirt base incorporating break-arch recess to apron and with ogee bracket feet. 12 Important John Gee 1779-1824 Original Regency Hardwood & Brass Dining Chairs

12 Important John Gee 1779-1824 Original Regency Hardwood & Brass Dining Chairs

By John Gee

Located in West Sussex, Pulborough

We are delighted to offer for sale this rare and important suite of twelve original John Gee 1779-1824 Regency bergère Rosewood with brass inlay dining chairs Where to start, these are as rare as they come, an original suite of John Gee chairs and twelve no less! They have rosewood frames, brass inlaid and period bergère seats with later mate removable cushions. I have included a brief history on John Gee below along with some of is later sales and so on Most likely if you are a collector and follower of fine furniture, you would have seen this design many times before, these are the originals, where it all began, the first edition period pieces by one of the great cabinet makers of the late 18th to early 19th century. The craftsmanship is as fine as they come In terms of the condition, they are all structurally sound, the finish is original and they haven’t been professionally restored so far as I can see. There are some small losses which is quite normal to the brass work and some punches to the bergère again consistent with age and use, they are after all, over 200 years old. We have deep cleaned hand condition waxed and hand polished them from top to bottom, I can have them fully, professionally restored for the cost price should the new owner wish, they can be made as gallery perfect as possible X2 Carver dimensions Height:- 84.5cm Width:- 52cm Depth:- 59cm Seat height:- 45cm X10 standard chair dimensions Height:- 84.5cm Width:- 46.5cm Depth:- 53cm Seat height:- 46cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point Gee, John 49, Wardour Street, Soho, London; chair maker and turner (fl.1779–c.1824) Also listed as Gee & Sons (1809) and Gee, Thomas Ayliffe (1804– 09) In about 1779 John Gee replaced Thomas Ayliffe as partner to Benjamin Crompton, who had been Turner in Ordinary to George III since 1762. On 14 October 1787 Gee was sworn in as turner ‘jointly with Thos. Ayliffe his partner’, but his name, unlike Ayliffe's, does not appear in the Court and City Register until 1799. Ayliffe was the fourth member of his family to be a turner to the King, so Gee was probably the junior partner. In 1790 Lord Wilton bought chairs for the Music Room at Heaton Hall, Lancs. ‘2 June 1790 Aycliffe & Gees Bill for chairs etc. £49 8s.’. From 1799, when he is described as ‘Chair-maker, 49 Wardour Street, Soho’, Gee is listed in London directories. In 1803 he is called ‘Chairmaker & Turner to His Majesty’ and this title occurs regularly in entries up to 1823; in most directories, however, this appointment is omitted. Gee is also included in the list of master cabinet makers attached to Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary, 1803. The last directory listing for Gee is 1823–24. On 8 November 1804 Thomas Ayliffe Gee was appointed Turner in Ordinary to the King jointly with his father and briefly, in one directory of 1809 the firm is listed as ‘Gee & Sons, Turners & chair makers’. John Gee's name is shown in the Court and City Register until 1831, well after his apparent retirement. Charles Holme Bridges, who succeeded Gee at 49 Wardour St in 1824 received a royal warrant in 1822 but is first entered as a turner in the 1832 Register. Gee's productions have been identified through stamped marks: ‘J GEE’, ‘GEE’, l GEE’, ‘Jn. G’ and a crown, J within G, and ‘GEE WARDOUR ST’ have been noted. Certain chairs are stamped with initials: ‘RR’, ‘GL’, ‘GH’, ‘IT’ and ‘WG’ have been noted. These are probably the marks of individual chairmakers in Gee's employ. His seems to have been a substantial undertaking. The following summary list records chairs by Gee in the order of their emergence: Pride's of London, 1962, 6 chairs, painted trophies on green and brown background, stamped ‘J GEE’. Bearne's Sale Rooms, 1964, settee, 2 armchairs, 7 chairs, stamped ‘J GEE’; 8 chairs, brass inlay, stamped ‘J GEE’.
