Balmoral by His Majesty King Charles III (formerly known as HRH Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales) - Hand Signed Limited Edition Lithograph. Belgravia Gallery has been honoured to be associated with the artworks of HRH The Prince of Wales for over 25 years. Anna Hunter, gallery owner, wrote a handwritten letter to the Prince asking him if he would consider making signed lithographs from his beautiful watercolours which could be sold in aid of his charities. The gallery subsequently worked with the Prince for over 10 years publishing some 18 different editions and raising over £4million for the Prince’s Charitable Foundation. Lithographs were made from the Prince’s original watercolours under the guidance of Stanley Jones – a celebrated printmaker who had previously worked with Henry Moore for 30 years, and with Elizabeth Frink, David Hockney and others. Each one is hand-signed. “…One thing I have discovered in the course of my painting efforts is that Balmoral Castle...

Cheltenham (Fantasia/Panorama), Pen and Ink Painting by John Piper, 1939 circa Additional information: Medium: Pen and ink 19 x 26.5 cm 7 1/2 x 10 3/8 in Inscribed extensively The upper image closely resembles a 1940 painting, Cheltenham Fantasia, which was sold to a Mr Anderson at the Leicester Galleries in March of that year. The lower image is a study for Piper's 1940 Curwen Press auto-lithograph 'Cheltenham', produced while he was also working on illustrations for the Shell and BP Shilling Guide to Gloucestershire (1939; not used in the project). Betjeman, then head of the project, also used the image to illustrate his article "Book Illustration Can Colour a Whole Town or City" in 'Signature' in 1940. The Cheltenham design is covered and reproduced in Hugh Fowler-Wright's book on Piper. Kirby Hall, Northamptonshire, Gouache with Ink and Wash Painting, 1940-42 circa Additional information: Medium: Gouache with ink and wash 15.2 x 18.5 cm 6 x 7 1/4 in As part of an eight-page pamphlet for The Colour of English Country Houses in 1944, Piper included a lovely auto-lithograph of Kirby Hall in Northamptonshire. This work was most likely sketched on the occasion of his visit to the Hall at this time and is of a slightly different angle. It is a working version of the cover of C Aspinall-Oglander's 'Admiral’s Widow’, 1942 (Hogarth Press). The print is cat. no.51.\\\ Piper gives a lovely description of this Elizabethan country house in the introduction to the pamphlet as follows: ‘A yellow stone house of the seventeenth century, in rolling green hunting-country. It gleams in the sun, forms a warm eye-catcher in dull weather and glimmers whitely in moonlight. It is another ruin, partly roofless, and has recently taken over by the Office of Works to be preserved as a show-place.’ (John Piper). Here, Piper, painting at night in the light of the moon, depicts the north front from the inner courtyard, capturing the brilliance of the moonlit night as it dances over the ruins making it in Piper’s own words ‘glimmer whitely’ whilst the dramatic shadows darken the archways and windows. John Piper was a painter of architecture, landscape and abstract compositions, a designer for the theatre and of stained-glass windows, and a writer on the arts. Piper was born in 1903 in Epsom, Surrey, the son of a solicitor. Throughout his childhood, he regularly visited Italy, and by 1924 he had published a book of poems and his own illustrations. Pollès - Unique Bronze Sculpture - Abysse Bronze 1/1 Created in 1990, casted in 2000 28 x 13 x 14 cm Signed and Numbered BIOGRAPHY Pollès was born in Paris in 1945 Like Leonard de Vinci in an anatomical search of perfection, of representation of movement, with an almost scientifical or medical glance, Pollès holds the utmost passion of anatomy: he learns about the human body, the complicated hank of muscles, movements of members and all the bodily mechanics. That’s why in 1964 he starts medicine school and along side goes to the Charpentier Academy where he follows art lessons. In 1966, he encountered sculpture in London where he was invited by his friend Enzo Plazota. This final step teaching him all the bases of sculpture. Pollès then decides to go to live in Italy, in Carrare, an important art place. He moved in 1970 and settled in Pietrasanta where he still lives. His sculptures, by creating a vision of the moving being, polished and smoothed, break the pureness of aestheticism. He just knows one theme, one model: the female form. According to Pollès, this is the most beautiful one, the most harmonious one. “When we are looking at a feminine body, it is splendid, it is musical”. His love of women, the sensuality, the complexity, the shapes and passions, brought him to explore the female form. Since the beginning he has created a singularly stylized cubist form; this becoming his signature form. All are cast in bronze by Pollès himself and made in a series of four with one artist's proof. His masterliness of the patina is considered unparalleled. The world's recognition of his craft is evidenced by the many awards he has won, the unique places he has shown and the prestigious private collections he is in, including that of Princess Caroline of Monaco. Pollès was recently honored in an exhibition outside Paris, sponsored by the French Government, called “Sculptors From Rodin to The Present”. He was one of the few living sculptors to be so honored; the others include Abakanowicz, Arman, Saint-Phalle & Wesselmann. Maurice Rheims, a respected Art Critic, and a member of The French Academy, has said “I consider Pollès to be one of the outstanding sculptors of our time.” His show in the Bagatelle Gardens in Paris in 1998 was a major honor as he was one of only two artists who have ever been allowed to present their work in the Bagatelle. The other artist is Henry Moore. The Blue Door, Oil on Canvas Painting by Ivon Hitchens 1893-1979, 1972 Additional information: Medium: Oil on canvas 41 x 109 cm 16 1/8 x 42 7/8 in Signed and dated; titled and inscribed on a label attached to the stretcher This depicts the back door of Greenleaves, the Sussex home that Hitchens built for his family after being bombed out of London in 1940. The door had become a regular motif in Hitchens’ work by 1972, as had the distinctive use of a wide-format canvas, where guides the viewer across the surface. Hitchens’ concern lay in expressing the experience of a place, rather than creating a mere likeness, ‘my pictures are painted to be “listened” to’ he declared in a 1956 article for the Royal College of Art journal. His later work shows his commitment to ‘visual sound’, becoming brighter in colour and more fractious in form: ‘visual sounds is of first and greatest importance. Without it the picture is useless’. Provenance Private Collection, London Ivon Hitchens was a British painter, mainly of landscapes. 'Setting up canvas and box in all weathers, I seek first to unravel the essential meaning of my subject, which is synonymous with its structure, and to understand my own psychological reactions to it. Next I must decide how best it can be rendered in paint, not by a literal copying of objects but by combinations and juxtapositions of lines, forms, planes, tones, colours etc., such as will have an aesthetic meaning when put down on canvas ... My pictures are to be listened to.' (The Artist, personal memorandum, c.1954) "Hitchens was born in London, son of the painter Alfred Hitchens, and studied at St John's Wood School of Art (1911-12) and the Royal Academy Schools (several years on and off between 1912 and 1919). In 1920, he became a founder member of the progressive 'Seven & Five Society' and was the only artist to belong to it throughout its entire lifetime until its demise in 1935. During this time, he experimented with pure abstraction (he exhibited as one of the 'Objective Abstractionists' in 1934), but by the late 1930s he had created a highly distinctive style on the borderline between abstraction and figuration in which broad, fluid areas of lush colour, typically on a canvas of wide format, evoke but do not represent the forms of the English countryside that were his inspiration. In 1940, following the bombing of his London studio, he settled permanently at Lavington Common, near Petworth, in Sussex. His work altered little from then, apart from the fact that his palette changed from naturalistic browns and greens to more vivid colours such as bright yellows and purples. Contrary to what often happens when an artist remains constant in one style over several decades, Hitchens's work did not become stereotyped or banal. In addition to landscapes, Hitchens painted flowers and figure subjects (usually nudes) and he did several large murals, for example at Nuffield College, Oxford (1959), and the University of Sussex (1963). His work is represented in the Tate Gallery, London, and many public collections. His son John Hitchens (1940- ) is also a painter, mainly of landscapes and flower pieces." A Dictionary of Twentieth-Century Art, 1999 Other members of the Seven and Five Society included Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, John Piper, Cedric Morris, Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Christopher Wood and David Jones. They were the a driving force in the 1930s London...
