A 15-inch terrestrial floor globe by Nims & Co

About the Item

A 15-inch terrestrial floor globe by Nims & Co, set within a brass meridian and a mahogany horizon ring with the signs of the zodiac and a panel stating ‘Manufactured by H.B. Nims & Co., Troy, New York’, all raised on an ornate tripod cast iron stand decorated with acanthus leaves and triple petal feet, above castors. American, circa 1870. Footnote: The firm H. B. Nims & Co. was one of seven incarnations of Merriam, Moore & Co. who Henry Nims (1828-1896) joined as a salesman in 1849. Because of his success in that department, he was made a partner in 1852 and, when Merriam left in 1858, the house became Moore & Nims. By 1869 Nims had bought out Moore and called the firm H.B. Nims & Co. until 1886 when Joseph Knight joined him.
