Ross Bleckner (American, b. 1949) Untitled, c. 1970 Oil on canvas 43 x 34 in. Signed verso: Ross B/ho Ross Bleckner grew up in Hewlett, Long Island, New York; drawing all the time without being aware that other artists existed. He was the middle child between two sisters; his father manufactures electronic parts He attended New York University where Sol Lewitt, Chuck Close and others were his teachers. He graduated in 1972, then spent a year at the California Institute of Arts. His contacts in the next few years were very fortuitous; Sol Lewitt and Chuck Close, Carl Andre, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, etc. Bleckner is on the nervous side, beset by self-doubt, insomnia, and gloom. He is unpretentious, although he is bluntly handsome, with olive complexion, and a compact build. He is "10 percent that is superficial and 90 percent that has to do with the depths and that is threatened by living. He is a very complicated individual. He is a very, very morose, deeply feeling, hardworking artist- he takes a lot from within himself - but always, no matter how successful he is, he feels he is going to fall into those depths." 1 Bleckner first exhibited his work in New York in 1974. The following year he was given his first one-man show; he was included in the 1975 Whitney Biennial.. Since about 1985 has addressed many of his paintings to the subject of AIDS- both documenting it as a historical phenomenon and commemorating specific individuals who have died. By Ross Bleckner

Located in New York, NY

Ross Bleckner THE WATER LILIES (C.M.) Year: 2019 Medium: Archival pigment print on Innova Etching Cotton Rag 315 gsm fine art paper Size: 42 x 70 inches (107 x 178 cm) Edition: 30 Price: $7,000 Also sold as a set with Floating Red Glowing and contemplative, Ross Bleckner’s work blends abstraction with recognizable symbols to create meditations on perception, transcendence and loss. Ross Bleckner was born in 1949 in New York and grew up in the prosperous town of Hewlett Harbor on Long Island. The first art exhibition he saw—The Responsive Eye, a show of Op art on view at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1965—had a strong impact on him. He decided to become an artist when he was in college, studying with Sol LeWitt and Chuck Close at New York University, where he earned a BA in 1971. Two years later, he completed an MFA at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, where he met David Salle. After moving back to New York, Bleckner purchased and moved into a Tribeca loft building in 1974. Painter Julian Schnabel rented three floors of the building, and the Mudd Club, a nightclub frequented by musicians and artists, occupied space there from 1977 to 1983. Bleckner sold the building in 2004. His first solo exhibition was held in 1975 at Cunningham Ward Gallery in New York. In 1979 he began his long association with Mary Boone Gallery in New York, which championed several of the so-called art stars of the 1980s. In 1981 Bleckner met Thomas Ammann, an important Swiss art dealer who went on to collect his work. Bleckner’s early 1980s Stripe...

"Color and Black" Large colors etching with aquatint, framed

By Sol LeWitt

Located in San Francisco, CA

This artwork titled "Color and Black #3" 1991 is a colors etching with spit bit aquatint on Somerset textured white paper by renown artist Sol (Solomon) Le Witt, 1928-2007. It is and signed and numbered 11/15 in pencil by the artist. Whit the blind stamp of the publisher/printer at the lower right corner. The image size is 22.75 x 22.75 inches, paper sheet is 40.75 x 39.75 inches, Framed size is 43.25 x 42,5 inches. Published by Crown Point Press, San Francisco. Printed by Lawrence Hamin, Lothar Osterburg, Paul Mullowney and Pamela Paulson at Crown Point Press, San Francisco. Referenced and pictured in the artist's catalogue raisonne #1991.07, plate #03. Custom Framed in a wooden black frame, floated on a white backing, with white spacer. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Known for his modular white cube sculpture, geometric drawings and abstract design paintings including many wall paintings that took teams of people to execute, Sol LeWitt was a major promoter of dominant post World War II Conceptualism and Minimalism. He used geometric shapes and lines to challenge his viewers, and sometimes they seemed logical and other times they seemed to have no basis in either reason or reality. Although he was highly active in New York City, he shied away from any semblance of art celebrity life style and spent much of his later life working from his home and studio in Chester, Connecticut. At the beginning of his career when he was gaining notoriety, conservative critics panned him fiercely. Seeking to get away from the frenetic activity of the New York art scene, he went to Spoleto, Italy in the 1980s and remained there for many years. The influence of Italian culture seemed to lend a new opulent quality to his work, and also the launching of his wall paintings, which he called drawings even though they were done with acrylic paint. "He began making colored flagstone patterns, spiky sculptural blobs and ribbons of color, like streamers on New Year's Eve, often as enormous decorations for buildings around the world. It was if he had devised a latter-day kind of Abstract Expressionism . . ." (Kimmelman) Of his personal modesty it was written: "He tried to suppress all interest in him as opposed to his work; he turned down awards and was camera-shy and reluctant to grant interviews. He particularly disliked the prospect of having his photograph in the newspaper." (Kimmelman) Sol LeWitt was born in Hartford, Connecticut to Russian immigrant parents. His father, a doctor, died when Sol was age six, and he and his mother then went to live with an aunt in New Britain, Connecticut. His mother encouraged his art talent, and enrolled him in classes at the Wadsworth Atheneum. LeWitt's subsequent residence in Chester, after he was a well-known artist, was near the Atheneum, and he became a strong supporter of that institution including the securing of a long time loan to it of a highly prestigious private collection of modern art. LeWitt earned a B.F.A. degree from Syracuse University in 1949, and then was drafted in the Korean War. His special assignment was making posters for the Special Services. From 1955 to 1956, he worked as a graphic designer for architect I.M. Pei, who was beginning his career. He also did pasteups for Seventeen magazine...

Limegreyrose, Beige, Orange, Green, Lemon Yellow, Gray Stripes, Geometric

By Elizabeth Gourlay

Located in Kent, CT

Clean and precise, carefully ordered stripes and blocks of color in orange, green, pale lemon yellow, gray, blue and brown are lively and vibrant against the soft beige background. Signed, dated and titled on verso. Elizabeth Gourlay’s work is a meditation on color and form, a gradual yet progressive analysis leading to a complex vocabulary of shapes, color and line. Musical composition, emotional states and our collective subconscious resonate within bars, lines and blocks of color. The abstract forms emerge, layer and shift in precisely ordered, carefully composed rhythms. Gourlay's artwork is a contemplation of the elements that make color in reduced forms come to life: size, flatness, relation to its edges, and how the presence of other colors affect how it is perceived. Gourlay drew inspiration from shapes found in everyday life and in her studio. The observed shapes either remain as they are or become simplified to their essential geometric elements. Subtleties in color, area, edge or orientation are the catalyst for emotive responses. Palette is minimized; the artist rarely used a wide palette within one work. Rather, a broad range of colors are explored and then reduced. Gourlay investigates color properties: complementary or analogous color, value, saturation and color harmony vs. color anomaly. Elizabeth’s Gourlay’s work has been shown extensively throughout the United States. The artist was the recipient of numerous residencies, fellowships and awards including Artist in Residence at the studio of Sol LeWitt in Spoleto, Italy. Gourlay’s work has been written about in The New Criterion, Painters’ Table and Gorky’s Granddaughter, to name a few. Gourlay earned her MFA at Yale University School of Art, New Haven, CT, and her BA from Edinburgh...

"Krameria, " Framed Limited Edition Giclee Print, 40" x 40"

By Roger Mudre

Located in Westport, CT

This abstract contemporary painting by Roger Mudre features a cool-toned palette with an iridescent quality. Circles with light outlines overlap one another in varying blue, green, white shades to create a larger blue circular form at the center of the composition. The painting, which is 36" x 36" (37.5" x 37.5" framed), transforms and shimmers in changing light due to hand-applied metal-leaf under-layer. It is framed in a gold-hued floater frame. It is wired and ready to hang. The focus of Roger Mudre’s work is the circle. This Connecticut-based artist finds inspiration in the colors and patterns of nature. Painting in jewel toned acrylics, he builds sheer layers of color on a subtly reflective metal leaf surface to create a picture plane that changes with the viewer’s perspective. Roger's work is part of many corporate and private collections including Hotel Zero Degrees in Norwalk, Connecticut, Frontier Communications, and the Energizer Corporation in Shelton, Connecticut. Roger is influenced by Joesph Albers...

Carlos Garcia de la Nuez (Cuba, 1959) 'Desde una Isla', 2005 engraving on paper Velin Arches 300 g. 28 x 39.8 in. (71 x 101 cm.) Edition of 99 Unframed ID: GAC-111 Hand-signed by author ___________________________________________________________ Carlos García de la Nuez. Born in Havana, Cuba, 1959. Lives and works in Mexico City, Mexico. He is a member of the renowned 1980s generation of Cuban artists, whose works differentiated from other contemporaries, noticeably in their intentional distancing from political criticism as a form of expression. This generation was interested in establishing and legitimizing new values of art for art’s sake, gathering inspiration from art movements happening outside of Cuba. Born in Havana, Cuba in 1959, the artist’s paintings explore abstraction and semiotics through the use of color, texture and scale. García de la Nuez participated in the historic 1982 exhibition titled 4x4 with colleagues Gustavo Acosta, José Franco and Moses Finalé.  In 1979 García de la Nuez entered the San Alejandro Academy of Arts and in 1983 completed his studies at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. He received his Masters of Arts in 1988 from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, upon receiving a scholarship from the Rockefeller Foundation. He spent a decade working and living in Paris, where he exhibited across Europe and was selected to participate in a silkscreen portfolio, Kinderstem, published by Domberger-Edition in Germany that featured García de la Nuez along with Max Bill, Sol LeWitt, Keith Haring, Christo, among others. In the early 1990’s García de la Nuez relocated in Mexico City, where he currently works and lives.  The artist’s works have been exhibited in various museums around the world including Boston, New York, Miami, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Bogota, Mexico City, San Jose, Panama City, Canada, Paris, Berlin, Stuttgart, London, Madrid, Moscow and Havana.  His work has been awarded the Painting Award 13 de Marzo...
