Reg Butler Abstract Figurative Signed "Manipulator"
Reg Butler Abstract Figurative Signed "Manipulator"

Reg Butler Abstract Figurative Signed "Manipulator"

By Reg Butler

Located in Detroit, MI

"Manipulator" is an abstracted figurative drawing in charcoal and graphite. The figure seems to be "manipulating" some object it holds without visual clarity as what that object is leaving it up to the viewer to fantasize about its intent. The drawing has a monumentality to it that speaks of Butler’s influence by Henry Moore, for whom he worked at one time, and echoes the style of the sculptures that Butler created. Butler most often used the female figure in his sculptures and drawings and although it is not certain, this drawing may be of a female figure engaged in some hand work with perhaps a mechanical toy that resembles a bird. Butler trained as an architect and worked as a blacksmith before becoming Henry Moore’s assistant and developing his own talent as a sculptor. His first solo exhibition was held in 1949 at the Hanover Gallery in London. In 1952 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale and in the same year won a much publicized competition for a Monument to the Unknown Political Prisoner which, however, was never made. After winning the 'Unknown Political Prisoner' competition in 1953 he became one of the best known sculptors during the 1950s and 1960s, and also taught at the Slade School of Art. Reginald Cotterell Butler (28 April 1913 – 23 October 1981) was an English sculptor born at Bridgefoot House, Buntingford, Hertfordshire to Frederick William Butler, formerly a police constable, and Edith Barltrop. His parents were the Master and Matron of the Buntingford Union Workhouse. His father was a relative of the poet William Butler Yeats; Edith was of Anglo-French descent. Butler studied and lectured at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London from 1937 to 1939. He was a conscientious objector during the Second World War, being exempted from military service conditional upon setting up a small blacksmith business repairing farm implements. Butler's later work consists of lifelike models of female figures, such as Girl on a Round Base, that have something in common with Hans Bellmer and the sculpture of Allen Jones and prefigure the work of Ron Mueck...

Large Modernist Bronze Abstract Figural Sculpture "Family" Wolfgang Behl

Large Modernist Bronze Abstract Figural Sculpture "Family" Wolfgang Behl

Located in Surfside, FL

This is a mid 20th century mod abstract large bronze sculpture by Wolfgang Behl (German/American, 1918-1994). The sculptural group titled "The Family" features a mother and father with two children. Numbered 20/20. Signed. 21" H x 10 1/4" x 10 1/4 Wolfgang (Johann Wolfgang) Behl (1918 - 1994) was active/lived in Connecticut, Illinois / Germany. Known for Sculpture and as an architectural carver. A carver, designer, and teacher, Wolfgang Behl was born in Berlin, Germany where he studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. His teacher was otto Hitzberger, sculptor and architecture carver. I have seen some his work, particularly in carved wood compared to Constantin Brancusi although this one seems way more reminiscent of Alberto Giacometti. In 1939, Behl came to the United States and taught briefly in Pennsylvania at the Perkiomen School and in Rhode Island at the Rhode Island School of Design. There in 1943, he won the Joseph N. Eisendrath prize for sculpture. He also became a friend of Louis Mayer, sculptor from Milwaukee. In 1944, Behl took a job as Art Director at the Lake Forest Academy in Lake Forest, Illinois, and he also began a one-year teaching assignment at the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee. The last years of his life until his death were in Hartford, Connecticut. Source: Peter C. Merrill, "German-Immigrant Artists in Early Milwaukee" Originally from Berlin, Germany, Mr. Behl immigrated to the United States in 1939 and became a citizen in 1947. He studied with Waldemar Raemisch at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, and later at the Rhode Island School of Design. He began teaching at the Hartford Art School in 1955, retiring in 1983 to devote his time to sculpting. Mr. Behl had exhibitions throughout the United States and Germany. Some of his solo exhibitions include the Arts Exclusive in Simsbury from 1976 to 1981, and the Bertha Schaefer Gallery in New York City from 1950 to 1973. He showed at the New Britain Museum of American Art, in New Britain, Connecticut in 1969. He also had several retrospectives, including one at the Greater Hartford Jewish Community Center in West Hartford until the end of this month. His works in bronze have a German Expressionist quality to them a pathos found in the works of Kathe Kollwitz and the Expressionist movement. He was known for his classically inspired, but often surrealist sculpture. Among his most-well known pieces are a series of sculptures done for the University of Connecticut Health Center. Several examples of Behl’s work are found on the campus of the University of Hartford. He was included in the show Monumentality in Modern Sculpture at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Texas, 1957. Artists featured in the exhibition: Kenneth Armitage, Hans Arp, Ernst Barlach, Wolfgang Behl, Dorothy Dehner, Edgar Degas, José de Rivera, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Joseph Glasco, Julio González, Paul Granlund...

33 Step Chair Large Polished Brass Bone Chair by Zhipeng Tan

By Zhipeng Tan

Located in Beverly Hills, CA

This visceral and sculptural chair is designed and made by renown artist Zhipeng Tan. Size and color is customizable upon request, lead time is 45-60 days. We ship internationally. Since graduating with an industrial design degree from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Zhipeng Tan has focused on the ancient technique of lost-wax casting. Through this foundry process, rich in heritage and tradition, Tan explores his interest in organic forms. Often inspired by his environmental surroundings, such as water and plants, he explores anthropomorphic themes, as well. Though trained as an industrial designer, he has become an accomplished self-taught sculptor, eagerly exploring the elastic and permeable boundaries between art and design and finding a harmonious fusion of sculpture and furniture, provocative objects of both beauty and utility. Though from his early work, one may sense the influence of Joan Miró, Henry Moore and Constantin Brancusi, and in his more recent pieces there is a nod to the Post-Pop sensibilities of Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami, the work of Zhipeng Tan is thoroughly original, an expression of his exuberance and imagination. In all of his work, one may see an exploration of our fundamental humanity and a desire to discover worlds within worlds. From the 33 Step Chair...

Walter Midener "Contemplation" Seated Figure Clay Sculpture Mid-Century Modern

Located in Detroit, MI

“Contemplation” is an abstract clay sculpture of a female. The figure has both arms and legs extended, but the dignified pose suggests an intimate rather than a sexual moment. The sculpture is delicately rendered, but monumental in pose and clean composition reminiscent of the English artist Henry Moore. The surface is warm and slightly rough to the touch. This sculpture is in the round and beautifully balanced geometrically with the hands clasped behind the head forming a slightly flattened polygon shape that is echoed in the positioning of the legs and draped fabric of a presumed dress. The figure draws the viewer into her contemplation, peace and confidence. An exceptional piece by Midener. Walter Midener...

British Modernist Vibrant Watercolor Painting of Flowers, Sir Jacob Epstein
British Modernist Vibrant Watercolor Painting of Flowers, Sir Jacob Epstein

British Modernist Vibrant Watercolor Painting of Flowers, Sir Jacob Epstein

By Sir Jacob Epstein

Located in Surfside, FL

Sir Jacob Epstein KBE (10 November 1880 – 19 August 1959) was an American British sculptor who helped pioneer modern sculpture. He was born in the United States, and moved to Europe in 1902, becoming a British subject in 1911. He often produced controversial works which challenged ideas on what was appropriate subject matter for public artworks. He also made paintings and drawings, and often exhibited his work. Epstein's parents were Polish Jewish refugees, living on New York's Lower East Side. He studied art in his native New York as a teenager, sketching the city, and joined the Art Students League of New York in 1900. For his livelihood, he worked in a bronze foundry by day, studying drawing and sculptural modelling at night. Epstein's first major commission was to illustrate Hutchins Hapgood's 1902 book Spirit of the Ghetto. Epstein used the money from the commission to move to Paris. Moving to Europe in 1902, he studied in Paris at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts. He settled in London in 1905 and married Margaret Dunlop in 1906. Epstein became a British subject on 4 January 1911. Many of Epstein's works were sculpted at his two cottages in Loughton, Essex, where he lived first at number 49 then 50, Baldwin's Hill (there is a blue plaque on number 50). He served briefly in the 38th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, known as the Jewish Legion during World War I; following a breakdown, he was discharged in 1918 without having left England. In London, Epstein involved himself with a bohemian and artistic crowd. Revolting against ornate, pretty art, he made bold, often harsh and massive forms of bronze or stone. His sculpture is distinguished by its vigorous rough-hewn realism. Avant-garde in concept and style, his works often shocked his audience. This was not only a result of their (often explicit) sexual content, but also because they deliberately abandoned the conventions of classical Greek sculpture favoured by European Academic sculptors to experiment instead with the aesthetics of art traditions as diverse as those of India, West Africa, and the Pacific Islands. Between 1913 and 1915, Epstein was associated with the short-lived Vorticism movement and produced one of his best known sculptures The Rock Drill. Between the late 1930s and the mid-1950s, numerous works by Epstein were exhibited in Blackpool. Adam, Consummatum Est, Jacob and the Angel and Genesis, and other works, were initially displayed in an old drapery shop surrounded by red velvet curtains. The crowds were ushered in at the cost of a shilling by a barker on the street. After a small tour of American fun fairs, the works were returned to Blackpool and were exhibited in the anatomical curiosities section of Louis Tussaud's waxworks. Bronze portrait sculpture formed one of Epstein's staple products, and perhaps the best known. These sculptures were often executed with roughly textured surfaces, expressively manipulating small surface planes and facial details. Some fine examples are in the National Portrait Gallery. He completed a bust of Winston Churchill...

By Georges Braque

Located in Southampton, NY

This exquisite lithograph after Georges Braque (1882–1963), titled Oiseau sur fond de X (Bird on Background of X), from the album San Lazzaro et ses Amis, Hommage au fondateur de la revue XXe siecle (San Lazzaro and His Friends, Tribute to the Founder of the Journal XXe Siecle), originates from the 1975 edition published by XXe siecle, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, October 1975. Oiseau sur fond de X exemplifies Braque’s late-career mastery of poetic symbolism and formal harmony. The composition’s abstracted bird—one of Braque’s most enduring motifs—emerges from an intricate background of interlocking shapes and textures, expressing his lifelong fascination with balance, serenity, and the unity between nature and form. Executed as a lithograph on velin d'Arches paper, this work measures 10.5 x 14 inches (26.67 x 35.56 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition reflects the exceptional craftsmanship of Mourlot Freres, the legendary Parisian atelier known for its collaborations with Braque, Picasso, Chagall, and Matisse. In addition, LV examples were printed for artists, authors, friends and collaborators of XXe siecle. The typography is from l'Imprimerie Union in Paris; the lithographs of Max Bill, Marc Chagall, Hans Hartung, Braque, Fontana, Magnelli, Picasso, Magritte and Poliakoff were printed by Fernand Mourlot in Paris; those of Alexander Calder and Joan Miro by l'imprimerie Arte in Paris; that of Max Ernst by Pierre Chave in Vence; that of Zao Wou-Ki by ateliers Bellini in Paris; and that of Henry Moore by the Curwen Studio in London. About the Publication: San Lazzaro et ses Amis, Hommage au fondateur de la revue XXe siecle (San Lazzaro and His Friends, Tribute to the Founder of the Journal XXe Siecle), published in 1975 by XXe siecle, Paris, was conceived as a landmark tribute to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, the visionary founder of the celebrated art journal XXe Siecle. The folio unites original lithographs by leading masters of modern art—Braque, Picasso, Chagall, Miro, Calder, Hartung, Moore, and others—printed by premier Parisian ateliers including Mourlot, Arte, Bellini, and Curwen. Representing the creative spirit and internationalism of postwar modernism, this edition stands as one of the great artistic collaborations of the 20th century. About the Artist: Georges Braque (1882–1963) was a French painter, printmaker, sculptor, and collagist whose visionary innovations and lifelong pursuit of balance, structure, and poetic form made him one of the most influential figures in 20th-century art. Born in Argenteuil-sur-Seine and raised in Le Havre, Braque began as a decorative painter before studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Humbert in Paris, where he absorbed the vibrant colorism of the Fauves and the structural logic of Paul Cezanne. His encounter with Pablo Picasso in 1907 led to one of the most groundbreaking collaborations in art history—the invention of Cubism—a movement that redefined visual perception by fragmenting form, rejecting single-point perspective, and reconstructing reality into a multidimensional experience. Between 1908 and 1914, Braque and Picasso revolutionized painting through Analytical Cubism, a style characterized by muted palettes, overlapping planes, and a focus on underlying structure rather than surface appearance. In 1912, Braque pioneered papier colle, the first use of collage in fine art, incorporating wallpaper and printed paper into his compositions and forever changing the relationship between art and the material world. After World War I, he returned to painting with renewed sensitivity, developing a lyrical and introspective form of Synthetic Cubism distinguished by harmony, rhythm, and a meditative sense of stillness. His still lifes, musical instruments, and interior scenes became metaphors for balance and contemplation, uniting intellect and emotion in perfect equilibrium. Immersed in the Parisian avant-garde, Braque worked alongside and exchanged ideas with Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, each of whom shared his passion for redefining the boundaries of modern art. His innovations in form, collage, and spatial construction deeply influenced later artists, including Jean Dubuffet, Nicolas de Stael, Henry Laurens, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Diebenkorn, and Jasper Johns, shaping the course of postwar abstraction and modern design. In 1961, Braque became the first living artist to have a solo exhibition at the Louvre, a recognition of his monumental impact on modern aesthetics. His works are now housed in major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and remain sought after for their intellectual depth and timeless serenity. His highest auction record was achieved by Paysage a la Ciotat, which sold for $15.8 million at Sotheby’s, New York, in 2013, reaffirming Georges Braque’s legacy as one of the founding architects of Cubism and a master whose art continues to define the modern age. Painted wood wall hanging sculpture "Red, White and Blue," (and gold) 2008 Stamped signed with initials, date and edition 2/5 Oded Halahmy, Abstract Modernist artist, was born in Iraq in the old city of Baghdad in 1938, the artist came from a family of Orthodox Jews with deep roots in ancient Babylonian culture. His father, Salech Haskel Chebbazah, was a prosperous goldsmith in Baghdad and a Jewish member of the Communist Party when Jews comprised more than a quarter of the population of Baghdad. He refers to his home as the “land of wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates.”, Oded moved with his family to Israel in the 1950s, was educated at St. Martin's School of Art in London which was then a leading center for sculpture, led by Anthony Caro and Philip King and having links to Henry Moore. He taught sculpture are in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, as well as many other public and private collections worldwide. He currently lives in New York City and Old Jaffa, Israel. Like countless New Yorkers who arrived from distant lands, Oded Halahmy has a rich personal history of exile, migration and travels. Although New York has been his home for over 45 years, memories of Iraq left an indelible imprint on his life and work. Known for his dynamic yet often playful figurative pop art style sculptures in wood and bronze, he fills his work with images — albeit abstracted from reality — that evoke the landscape, architecture and rich colors of the Middle East. Palm trees, doves, pomegranates, temples and age-old symbols abound along with deep reds, amber, sky blue and the familiar greenish-blue hues of aged bronze. Mobius H4 Black Marble - Contemporary Sculpture, Signed, Edition of 50

By Jeremy Guy

Located in Bloomfield, ON

This contemporary sculpture in black marble is by Jeremy Guy. For more than two decades, Jeremy Guy’s name has been synonymous with elegant, masterfully created modern sculptures that have attracted an international audience. The Möbius series is a testament to Guy’s timeless sense of design and flawless craftsmanship—this piece is honed from one solid stone of rich black marble. Remarkably smooth-surfaced and highly polished, this iconic form (also called the infinity loop)—a Möbius strip -- is a mathematical construct—a surface with only one side and one boundary. It was first discovered in 1858 by a German mathematician. You can actually create your own Möbius loop by taking a strip of paper, giving it a half twist and joining the ends to form a loop. Early in his career, Guy’s superb work was inspired by the renowned modernist British sculptors Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. Möbius H4 sits on a rectangular black plinth. “(The) infinity loop has been the subject of philosophical contemplation since its discovery by August Möbius in 1858. In popular culture, the Möbius loop symbolizes unity and timelessness. I have also added a semi-figurative aspect to my interpretation. This ‘Möbius’ sculpture...
