The subject of the painting, derived from Ovid’s Metamorphoses (Book IV, lines 663–752), is inspired by the myth of Princess Andromeda, daughter of King Cepheus of Ethiopia and Queen Cassiopeia, depicted here as she is freed by the Greek hero Perseus after he has defeated the sea monster that held her captive. This cruel punishment had been imposed on her by Poseidon, god of the seas, to atone for the arrogance of her mother Cassiopeia, who had dared to compare herself and her daughter to the Nereids in beauty. When Perseus returned home on his winged horse Pegasus after his victory over the fearsome Medusa, he saw the princess chained to a rock on the coast and, overwhelmed by her beauty, decided to save her. The hero, clad in gleaming armour and wearing the red cloak of the victor and a crested helmet, is flanked by two small cherubs, one of whom helps him to break the chains binding Andromeda to the rock, emphasising the theme of love triumphing over danger. This is a smaller version derived from the famous ‘Perseus Frees Andromeda’ painted by Peter Paul Rubens around 1620, now housed in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, from which the main scene on the right has been taken. Rubens, who often employed sophisticated references to antiquity to emphasise the message of his paintings, modelled the figure of Andromeda and the cherub at her side, intent on loosening her chains, on the statue of the Happy Venus (Rome, Vatican Collections, which he saw during his stay in Rome. The success of Rubens’s work led to its widespread circulation and a substantial number of copies produced by his workshop (in Vienna at the Liechtenstein Gallery, in Potsdam at the Sanssouci Gallery, the Museum of Arles, and the Museum of Lisbon). It is our opinion that the authorship of the finely executed painting presented here is to be attributed to a Flemish artist active around the second half of the 17th century amongst Rubens’s followers...

History Pan American Airways began the first transatlantic passenger service on this day in 1939. Pan American World Airways, as it was to be known, commonly known as Pan Am, was the principal United States international air carrier from the late 1920s until its collapse on December 4, 1991. Founded in 1927 as a scheduled air mail and passenger service operating between Key West, Florida, and Havana, Cuba, the airline became a major company credited with many innovations that shaped the international airline industry, including the widespread use of jet aircraft, jumbo jets, and computerized reservation systems. The history of Pan American Airways is inextricably linked to the expansive vision and singular effort of one man – Juan Trippe. An avid flying enthusiast and pilot, Trippe, only 28 years old when he founded the airline, lined up wealthy investors and powerful government officials from his personal acquaintances in the high-society of the 1920s. However, Pan Am’s first flight was an inauspicious start to its epic saga. In 1927, facing a Post Office deadline for the commencement of mail carriage, Pan Am had no working equipment for its sole airmail contract between Key West and Havana. Fortunately for Pan Am, a pilot with his Fairchild seaplane arrived at Key West and was willing to carry the mail to Cuba for the start up operation. It is fitting that Pan Am’s first flight would be over water, since the airline would Pioneer overseas routes throughout its history. Pan Am’s fortunes took a turn for the better in the fall of 1927. Through the heavy lobbying efforts of Juan Trippe, Pan Am was selected by the United States government to be its “chosen instrument” for overseas operations. Pan Am would enjoy a near monopoly on international routes. Added to Pan Am’s Cuba route were lines serving Mexico, Central America, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Puerto Rico. Most of these destinations were port cities, which could be reached only by landing on water. Therefore Pan Am made good use of its “flying boats,” the Sikorsky S-38 and S-40. Flights were eventually expanded to serve much of South America as well. EnlargePan Am’s fleet of Clippers allowed the airline to conquer the Pacific in the mid-1930s. The flying boats would later be put to military use in WWII. Just a few years later, Pan Am launched its effort to cross the world’s largest oceans. Survey flights across the Pacific were conducted with the Sikorsky S-42 in 1935, but passenger service required bigger and better aircraft. Abstract oil on canvas painting by Ivan Freitas. 25" x 31" inch canvas, framed to 30" x 36". It is signed at the lower right. Bearing a Barcinski Art Gallery label verso and a second label stating that the painting was sold in 1961 at a benefit auction for the Albert Einstein Hospital held at the Museum of San Paulo. Ivan Freitas was a Brazilian Postwar & Contemporary painter and Muralist (1932-2006) Son of muralist Severino Araújo, Ivan started painting as a self-taught artist. His first individual exhibition was at the Public Library, in 1957. With the success of the exhibition, he was able to move to Rio de Janeiro the following year, in 1958, where he came into contact with the work of artists such as Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte who influenced him. Between 1962 and 1963 he resided as a fellow in Paris. Between 1969 and 1972, he was on his second tour abroad, in New York City and commissioned by the International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation. Back in Brazil, he painted a mural of over a thousand square meters on the external wall of the National School of Music in Rio de Janeiro in 1984 - the first of the Arte nos Muros Project. Still in the 70s, he married Dalva Mendes Gall whom he left after his death in 200, an extensive collection where one can find all the best works of this renowned Paraiba artist in Brazil and abroad. The stay in New York, from 1969 to 1972, was perhaps the greatest turning point in Ivan's career. Until then, according to art critic Roberto Pontual, the plastic artist followed "a phase of abstraction close to the informal". In the United States , with so much technological influence around him, Ivan becomes interested in the machine and its movement mechanisms and inserts these perceptions in his works, as kinetic constructions with small motors hidden in boxes as Pontual defines, and also and triggering light patterns in cyclic and repeated series. (similar to the Op Art works of Julio le Parc and works by Yves Tinguely being shown at Rene Denis Gallery in Paris In 1968, the magazine Galeria de Arte Moderna (GAM), published an article entitled Ivan Freitas and the Cosmic Space. In the Brazilian Dictionary of Plastic Artists , the Italian art critic Giuseppe Marchiori refers to Ivan Frentas as someone who "controls and dominates each part of the painting with a desire to deepen the image that surprises and enchants". Still according to the critic, Ivan is someone who preserves the mystery in the harmony between lines and the colorful atmosphere, where he creates pauses and rhythms for the reading of his "secret structures". Arte Neo Concreta artists Lygia Clark, Helio Oiticica and Lygia Pape, were all contemporaries The poet Ferreira Gullar writes: "Freitas does not turn to the subjective world, does not inquire into the arcana of the unconscious; he inquires into the future and, in the solitude of his paintings, promises us a serene and orderly world. And, if in his landscapes man does not appear, it is not that this order excludes him - it is that he has not yet reached it.
