Large Cubist Musical Painting by Red Hammond

By Red Hammond

Located in New York, NY

Red Hammond (American) The Klue, 1986 Oil on canvas 65 1/4 x 53 1/2 x 1 1/2 in. Signed, dated, and inscribed verso Artist statement sourced from Red Hammond's website: ORIGINALITY As an artist I put myself into the piece of art not to achieve originality for its own sake, but to be honest to, to follow the work. Immersion in the making ensures that the work will be authentic -.that its uniqueness allows the work to emanate its own light, encouraging the viewer to look and to see. While not initially apparent, my paintings typically have numerous, subtle inflections that are often hidden at first glance because the large primary, usually black forms, are strong and register first. SHAPES AND EMOTIONS I place significant emphasis on my ability to invent personal shapes. When put together, they establish a dialogue within the painting. I start without any preconceived idea for the painting and do not work from drawing in order to maintain the spontaneity and challenge to work through a solution - to remain fresh and capable of creating surprises for both myself and the viewer. Working instinctually, , I grope around, figuring out how the feelings I have manifest themselves in a specific shape or shapes and how to achieve the overall mood I’m searching for in a particular piece. SYMBOLS AND MEANING I build a painting with symbols that go beyond words, creating works that may appear somewhat opaque, mysterious, at times. This encourages engagement on the part of the viewer and allows each viewer to arrive at their own ideas concerning the works’ meaning. Viewers of art often confuse subject matter with content. A cow in a field is a cow in a field - that is subject matter. Content is what the artist puts in of him or herself. That is an intangible that is difficult to decipher. I find the early work of the American abstract expressionists and the artifacts and ritual art of indigenous peoples and tribal cultures to be inspirations. COMPLETION Often I’m sure that I have completed a painting and for that moment in time I probably have. Sometimes, however, hours, days or several years later, I look at again and realize that while I was correct for that moment, the painting’s potential was never realized. So I begin the process of working that painting again, and this process can go on for years until I’ve finally got the painting to where it needs to be in order for it to be fully realized. ART AS THERAPY AND DISCOVERY Like life, art is not just about self-improvement but also about self-discovery. If I’m not working on getting better as a painter, improving my paint application or pushing myself to expand my limits as a person, I feel I’m letting myself down and falling short of my potential as an artist. Each day in the studio is a mini-metaphor for life that demands and rewards patience.… Without it, I end up with a big...

French Modern Cubist Figurative Abstraction — Aegina Greece, Deep Blue Green
French Modern Cubist Figurative Abstraction — Aegina Greece, Deep Blue Green

French Modern Cubist Figurative Abstraction — Aegina Greece, Deep Blue Green

Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR

Couple à Aegina (A Couple in Aegina) Acrylic on Canvas 61 x 50 cm Couple à Aegina presents two intertwined figures assembled within a structured architectural setting inspired by the Greek island of Aegina. Rather than depicting a fixed scene, the composition builds from fragments — bodies, objects, spatial planes — held together through vertical alignment and interlocking geometry, so that figure and environment become genuinely inseparable. A central elongated form anchors the work, while surrounding elements — suggestive of musical instruments, interior structures, and architectural detail — intersect and layer. The figures remain partially legible, continuously shifting between presence and abstraction as they absorb and release the forms around them. The palette is restrained and deliberate: deep blacks and muted blues form the dominant ground, punctuated by sage greens and lighter neutral passages. Small circular accents and linear elements move across the surface, creating an internal rhythm that draws the eye without dictating a fixed entry point. This is not a scene captured at a single moment. Working through what he calls a "reverse jigsaw logic" — beginning with a figurative view of reality, then fragmenting and recomposing it — Mathias brings multiple perceptions into one field: variations in viewpoint, shifts in spatial relation, different moments of observation layered together. Like his figurative works more broadly, the human presence here is never isolated; it is always integrated with place, absorbed into the architecture and light of Aegina itself. Living with the Work: Before acquiring this piece, consider: at 61 x 50 cm, this is an intimate format — best suited to a space where you will naturally spend time close to it, rather than a large wall viewed from across a room. Does the space you have in mind allow for that? Does your interior already carry deep blacks, blues or greens, or would this palette introduce a contrast you'd find interesting to live with? Are you drawn to the human figure as a subject, or does the way the figures here dissolve into their architectural surroundings — becoming part of the place rather than standing apart from it — feel like the more compelling idea? Collector's Insight Rooted in the direct lineage of Jean Metzinger — whose disciple Claude Augereau was Mathias's professor at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris — this work extends the structural logic of European Cubism into a genuinely original proposition. Where Cubism fragmented space, Diachronic Cubism fragments time itself, embedding successive moments of perception within a single composition. The result sits comfortably within the tradition of Gris and Gromaire while belonging to no one but Mathias. About the Artist Grégoire Mathias, graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, is the pioneer of Diachronic Cubism — an evolution of the cubist tradition that captures not only multiple points in space but multiple moments in time within a single work. His paintings have been exhibited in Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Bordeaux, and Dublin. Since 2020, he has been the official artist of the WFUNA (World Federation of United Nations Associations), designing posters for United Nations Day in Geneva — the first French artist commissioned to do so since Picasso, Chagall, and Miró. Keywords Diachronic cubism, Greek island painting...

San Marco, Venice — Cubist Italian Cityscape Painting in Blue and Ochre, Acrylic

Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR

San Marco, Venise Acrylic on Canvas 60 x 49 cm Signed lower right and on the reverse In San Marco, Venise, Grégoire Mathias translates the timeless elegance of Venice’s architecture into his distinctive language of Diachronic Cubism — a style that captures not only multiple spatial perspectives but also the passage of time within a single composition. The familiar arches and reflections of the Venetian lagoon dissolve into an intricate interplay of geometric planes and shifting tones of turquoise, ivory, and sand. The result is a composition that feels both architectural and fluid — an echo of light dancing on water, where memory and presence coexist. Mathias’s mastery lies in how he balances structure and emotion, transforming an iconic cityscape into a meditation on rhythm, space, and movement. Perfect For: Collectors of modern Cubism • Venice and Italy enthusiasts • Contemporary interiors with neutral or coastal tones • Living rooms or entryways seeking architectural depth and movement Collector’s Insight: This painting belongs to Mathias’s Venetian Series, where he explores the interplay between history and modernity through cubist fragmentation. Its soothing palette and elegant balance make it a perfect statement for collectors drawn to contemporary reinterpretations of classic European subjects. Keywords: Venetian painting, Piazza San Marco, cubist architecture, modern cubism, French contemporary art, Greg Mathias, Diachronic Cubism, contemporary Cubism, modern architecture art...

John Hatch American Cubist Landscape Oil Painting Massachusetts Seascape 1952

By John W. Hatch

Located in Buffalo, NY

An original oil on board painting by American modernist John W. Hatch. This incredible cubist landscape was created in 1952. Estate stamped and dated on the reverse. Titled, "Nahant Rocks, Lynn, MA " with a partial exhibition label on the reverse. The painting comes housed in a black wood frame presentation. John Woodsum Hatch 1919-1998 During his fifty-year career as an artist, John Woodsum Hatch explored the people, the landscape, and the seascape around him. From his extensive travels to his years in New Hampshire, he developed a body of work that captures a sense of place. Through watercolor, ink and sand, he depicted the grandeur of the White Mountains. The crisp light and distinct topography of the Isles of Shoals and Great Bay Estuary are precisely and clearly documented in acrylic and tempera paintings. His ability to convey the sheer scale and longevity of the mountains and sea, and by comparison the fleeting nature of human life, conveys in a not-so-subtle way that the natural environment is to be revered and preserved. Hatch took his first teaching job at the University of New Hampshire in 1949, the same year he graduated from Yale University. He never left. A former student, Sam Cady, described his contributions: “He was a wonderful mix of jokester and sage. A teacher who obviously loved people, loved teaching, and had a great gift for it.” After retiring in 1985, he was made an honorary Professor Emeritus at UNH. Hatch contributed to New Hampshire's cultural life in three areas: his teaching, his art, and his community service. His effectiveness in these three areas can be traced his commitment to give something of himself to help others. Hatch’s work can be seen in numerous public collections, including: the Addison Gallery of American Art; DeCordova Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; State of New Hampshire's Living Treasures Collection, and the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. John Woodsum Hatch, New Hampshire's 1997 Living Treasure Award recipient, died on August 6, 1998, at the age of 78. Hatch was a draftsman, an artist and a muralist. His works can be found in public and private collections throughout the region. He exhibited at the New Hampshire Art...
