An important early 20th century Favrile glass flower large bowl with matching frog Centerpiece by Tiffany Studios, produced in the United States circa 1926. Known as the “Leaf and Vine” pattern, this elegant floral bowl exemplifies Tiffany Studios’ late production of functional yet highly decorative Favrile glass tableware and interior objects. The bowl is hand-blown in Favrile glass, a material patented by Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1894 and celebrated for its inherent iridescence achieved through the incorporation of metallic oxides into the molten glass. The Tiffany craftsmen had been using paperweight techniques for a decade (works in which floral motives were worked in hot glass and then encased within layers of additional glass). Those made around 1900 generally had a shimmering golden background but, around 1910, this changed to a clear, transparent glass. Aquamarine glass introduced a subtle, green-tinged material that suggested a watery realm. Cased within the glass are yellow flowered plants like the one in this vase, floating in an aqueous world is this water lily. To further the illusion of watery depths, the glass itself is quite thick offering the viewer different perspectives such as one has when peering through actual water. Tiffany Studios' difficulty in making this glass was constantly emphasized. Not only was there the difficulty of properly annealing the many layers but equally challenging was the manipulation of the weighty glass ball while it was still hot and fluid. These technical difficulties caused much breakage, and the Aquamarine vases were costly as a result. Several examples were shown at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition in San Francisco. This elegant iridescent gold Favrile art glass vase was made by Tiffany Studios operating under the direction of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Tiffany Favrile Glass was first offered to the public in 1893 and this hand-blown piece dates to the mid-to-late 1920s. The vase has a warm golden glow and was crafted with a wide domed pedestal base that gives way to a ribbed body. The body flares slightly as it rises and transitions dramatically to a wide shallow neck that terminates in a scalloped-edge rim. As seen in the accompanying photographs, the well-balanced piece is nicely proportioned and displays beautifully. The vase stands 8.375" as measured to its tallest point and is 3.75" across the rim. The foot is 4" from edge to edge. The piece is free of chips and cracks and is presented in original condition with no restoration or repair. Known as a "Pansy" vase, this Favrile glass creation by Tiffany Studios New York begins with a bulbous base in deep hues of striated, swirling iridescent yellow and gold. Shooting upward from the base is an elongated, narrow neck of similar coloration, darkening in coloration as it ascends. From the narrow neck explodes an outward facing glass bloom in brilliant shades of ochre, umber and marigold, made to shimmer by the undulations in the bloom's outer edges, all tinged with iridescence. Tiffany glass refers to the many and varied types of glass developed and produced from 1878 to 1933 at the Tiffany Studios in New York, by Louis Comfort Tiffany and a team of other designers, including Clara Driscoll, Agnes F. Northrop and Frederick Wilson. In 1865, Tiffany traveled to Europe, and in London he visited the Victoria and Albert Museum, whose extensive collection of Roman and Syrian glass made a deep impression on him. He admired the coloration of medieval glass and was convinced that the quality of contemporary glass could be improved upon. In his own words, the "Rich tones are due in part to the use of pot metal full of impurities, and in part to the uneven thickness of the glass, but still more because the glass maker of that day abstained from the use of paint".
