What medieval chairs were called depended on their style. An elaborately decorated folding stool typically used by royals and dignitaries was a curule chair, while a chair with an X-framed seat was known as a faldstool. Caquetoires were chairs designed for use in seating areas. They typically featured high, narrow backs and curved arms.
