Dee Shapiro Illustrate Illusion, 1990 Oil painting on panel Signed twice: once on the front, and once on the back, with copyright, date and title Unique Oil on panel painting, unique Signed twice: once on the front, and once on the back, with copyright, date and title Provenance: Acquired from the estate of renowned New York art dealer Andre Zarre Frame included: Double framed in an elegant white wood museum quality frame Measurements: Framed 14.5 inches by 16.75 inches by 1.75 inches Artwork: 7.75 inches by 9.5 inches DEE SHAPIRO BIOGRAPHY Biography • Dee Shapiro (b. 1936) Dee Shapiro was born in Brooklyn, NY. She studied art and psychology in college, receiving both a BA and an MA from Queens College (1954-1960). There she studied color with abstract artist John Ferren. A semester in Mexico in 1956 introduced her to bright patterns and colors, as well as the murals of River, Orozco, and Siqueiros. From 1960 to 1968, Shapiro taught, got married, and raised kids. She still made time for art, taking painting classes with Richard Mayhew at the Brooklyn Museum. When she and her family moved to Great Neck in 1968, she founded Central Hall, the first women’s cooperative gallery in Long Island. Shapiro was also a contributor to Heresies, a feminist publication on art and politics. Shapiro explores the intersections of pattern, geometry, nature, and craft in her work. As a child, knitting instilled an interest in how patterns develop from small individual components into larger compositions, as well as the importance of counting and learning numerical patterns. Her first abstract paintings in the 1970s were based on mathematical concepts, particularly the Fibonacci sequence that generates the Golden Mean. Early works included arrangements of ordered tally marks in bright colors or gridded diagrams of the Fibonacci sequence. Shapiro soon moved to patterns that allowed her to use color intuitively within a grid. She built up the surface of the paintings by squeezing paint directly from the tube to create a woven or knitted texture. Shapiro was included in Pattern Painting at PS 1 in 1977, organized by noted curator John Perreault, which presented work by twenty-two artists working in the P&D Movement. The Everson Museum in Syracuse, NY organized a solo exhibition of her work in 1981. Her New York dealer was Andre Zarre. Shapiro was a member of the Criss-Cross Artist Collective, founded in 1974. The group originated in Boulder, CO as artists interested in Systemic Pattern Painting or Structuralism. The group expanded into New York, California and Europe with its art journal Criss-Cross Art Communications, published from 1974 to 1981. They aimed to foster group work, interaction, integration, and synthesis. The artists were interested in geometry and pattern yet worked in a variety of art forms including text, sound, film, and dance. What connected the artists were: a capacity for visual organization; valuing the importance of pattern on perception and knowledge; and a methodology of system, ordering, and counting. The artists that crossed over with the Pattern and Decoration Group were Dee Shapiro, Gloria Klein...

Pals - Two Bicycles Abstract Geometric Mixed Media Painting on Wood

By Rebecca Klundt

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Rebecca Klundt’s "Pals" uncovers the unique beauty of original paintings, geometric abstractions, and textural mixed-media art. This 32-inch high by 25-inch wide artwork transforms reclaimed wood into a stunning assemblage finished with layers of acrylic paint, highlighting Klundt's commitment to sustainability and creative renewal. Perfect for lovers of eco-friendly art and modern textural compositions, "Pals" features a playful yet sophisticated design of figures composed of bold lines and shapes against a distressed wood-texture background. Klundt’s use of found materials and geometric patterns creates a sense of harmony and order, while the vibrant accents of orange and teal bring dynamic energy to this visually captivating piece. Key Features: > Mixed-Media Assemblage: Crafted from reclaimed wood and layered with acrylic paint, resulting in a textured, geometric composition. > Compact Statement Size: At 32 x 25 inches, this original artwork is ideal for adding a unique touch to smaller spaces or as part of a gallery wall. > Eco-Friendly Art: Made with sustainable materials, reflecting Klundt’s passion for repurposing and renewal. > Ready to Hang: Mounted on a sturdy wood panel, wired, and painted on the sides, eliminating the need for additional framing. > Authenticity Guaranteed: Signed on the back by Rebecca Klundt, with a certificate of authenticity included. About the Artist: Rebecca Klundt, a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, holds a BFA from Brigham Young University and is widely recognized for her innovative use of reclaimed materials in art. Inspired by the natural world and the process of transformation, Klundt creates abstract works that explore themes of renewal, order, and the beauty of lines. Her artistic philosophy embraces using "the unusable" and turning discarded materials into thoughtful, organized compositions. Drawing from the textures and fissures of Utah’s slick rock formations, Klundt’s works are a testament to her love of significant lines and her ability to imbue each piece with a sense of natural balance and human ingenuity. Why "Pals" Stands Out: Rebecca Klundt’s "Pals" is a perfect example of her ability to merge sustainability with contemporary art. Its playful geometric forms and eco-conscious construction make it an ideal addition for collectors seeking modern, textural art that tells a story of creativity and renewal. "Pals", a one-of-a-kind original mixed-media painting by Rebecca Klundt adds sustainable elegance to any home or office space. This unique, eco-friendly artwork celebrates the beauty of reclaimed materials and modern abstraction. Chasmanthium Insignias: Abstract Encaustic Painting with Green, Earth Tones

By Allyson Levy

Located in Hudson, NY

Abstract encaustic painting with a green, earth toned palette. Made with natural plant material (Northern Sea Oats) "Chasmanthium Insignias I" made by Allyson Levy in 2021 encaustic and plant material on wood panel, 24 x 24 x 1 inches Lightweight, hangs with one d-ring, Signed, verso This modern abstract encaustic painting by Allyson Levy is made with Northern Sea Oats and green encaustic, sealed with a layer of neutral wax on a wood panel. The artist begins by finding the organic material in her 4-acre garden in upstate New York which she then arranges and embeds with encaustic on a wooden panel. The brown, earth toned sea oats are laid in a linear pattern on a wood panel with a surface of green encaustic and then sealed with clear wax. The encaustic wraps around to the sides of the panel, revealing some bumps and downward drips, accumulated during the natural drying process. The piece is lightweight and hangs on one d-ring. About the artist and her work: After moving to the rural town of Stone Ridge, NY seventeen years ago and starting a 4-acre botanical garden with her husband, mixed media artist, Allyson Levy, has found endless inspiration in the plant kingdom that surrounds her. The garden itself, named “Hortus Conclusus”, consisting of thousands of rare plants and edibles, remains at the epicenter of Levy’s art making. A fascination with earth’s bounty is expressed with her works in encaustic. Assorted organic material such as leaves, seeds, branches, insect wings...
